First Bear
« on: August 07, 2008, 04:09:32 PM »
I went out Tuesday night and finally after 5 years of trying got my first bear.  I shot her at 260 yards.  She measured 4 foot head to tail.  The thing that I am most excited about, was that her nose and mouth were stained from berries.  I am assuming she is going to taste great.  Shot her at around 7 pm.  Had to skin and pack it out the next morning due to where she ended up after the shot, WAY downhill and in some real thick brush.  Either way, now that the initial thrill is over, I am already getting the itch again.  See you out there and Good Luck.

Congratulations.

As far as the overnight thing--isn't that dangerous? Doesn't the meat start to rot?  I"m glad to hear you'll be eating it, but I don't want to see you get sick.

Sorry if I'm going off topic.   :jacked:

I believe Snowman said they were back in befor it got light.

If they would have left it out all day with the guts in it than yeah that probably wouldn't be a good thing.  Since they more than likely gutted it and it was at night I doubt they had a problem with rotten meat.  They may trim some of the meat off from around the bone, maybe.

In Georgia when I was skinning and gutting deer at the Deer Processor people use to bring deer in all the time that they had left out over night.  Of course, they didn't bother to gut them. :puke:

I would be extremly leary of eating the bear, overnight at this time isnt good for a bear, nothing like dealing with a deer or elk. I have had bears rot on me in hours from the heat and just laying on its side where there ground insulates the body.I wouldnt even think about eating it if I shot it over here eastern WA, maybe cooler temps there.

We gutted it, opened up the chest cavity, and left it for maybe 5 hours.  When we finished, the air had cooled down and so had the bear.  We got it to the butcher by 930 am.  They said that the meat was fine.  Thanks for the info and concern.  I will keep that in mind for sure.

Speaking of Snowman....the little sh@# took another bear tonight.  He's on a roll and rockin' the house!  He's done for the year, and it's only been a week. :)

I had just left work when he called me.  My body is hurting.  3 bears in one week will do that.  Im just waiting for my new scope to arrive, then its back to get my 2nd.   And believe me, he is the first person I am calling when the next bear goes down.
