E reader which one is the best.
« on: June 04, 2012, 07:12:55 PM »
I will be buying a E reader this week, and not knowing much about them it seems to be overwhelming with the amount of products, apps, availiblity of books etc.  I have my eye on the Kindle fire, but don't know many that have e readers themselves. I will not purcase a Ipad due to the price.  For those tha own nooks, kindles and anything else out there can you give me the pros and cons please?   :hello:

I have a Nook color and I like it a lot, I just use the reader, it has many other functions I don't use.

no experience with others.

Ok, pretty simple.  Nook and Kindle are the top readers out there, no comparison.  I'm a very avid reader, read at least 10,000 pages a year in books.  I own a Nook, and the reason was simple.  With a Nook you can put PDF files on it.  Which means some libraries (King County comes to mind) where you can check out books online to your Nook.  Now...I haven't done that haha, because I like owning my books, but I could if I wanted to.

Now, on another note.  Do not get a "color" anything if you want to read it for reading.  You don't get the E Ink technology with the colors, it's essentially a little laptop, which is not what I wanted.  I wanted something to read.

The laptop screen hurts your eyes after a while.  The E Ink is just like reading a book.  Hope that helps!

My wife has gone through two Sony e readers in the last year. They get to a point where they wont hold a charge anymore. My daughter just went through her fourth kindle. Multiple issues with each one. Under warranty yes, but this last one was pissin me off too much.

They both have iPads now and couldn't be happier. I know you said you werent interested in one, but ive had mine almost a year now and im not turning back. Hell I can't even remember the last time I turned my laptop on.

Thanks for all the inputs, whichever one I buy  I will be using this on my upcoming deployment.  Which one of the 3 has the best selection of books, or are they all universal?

I have a Kindle Fire that I appreciate more and more every day! I have wrist issues that are greatly aggravated by the posture your wrists use when holding a book, I had largely stopped reading. If I had to guess I would say I will end up reading around 25,000+ pages read this year :)

There are a ton of apps available for these but only a few that I actually use, one of which is to allow use of epub books (free), it's great to take on trips as it's easier to navigate than a phone for internet use, checking/sending emails etc. I really like that you can read in total darkness with it, I wouldn't go without the full color bit myself although you do pay for it in reduced battery life. If pdf are your thing..."there's an app for that!" ... office document creation or just reading etc "there's an app for that!"

For maximum bang for your buck, check out a Prime membership, I avoid stores like the plague and just have everything shipped to me with free 2 day shipping from Amazon. You get free book and movie "borrowing" as well, it's pretty damn slick and well worth the cost.

FWIW I pre-ordered my Kindle Fire (got it the day before release), use it everyday and have had no issues with it, of the people I know who have them only one has had a problem and he "rooted" his kindle so it's entirely possible that he might have had a bit to do with his Kindle's problems.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

I know you can use Nook and Kindle books on the Fire.

I have the kindle 3g or whatever. The thing is awesome, got it for christmas and I put a few books on it a month. I like that it's got the e-ink or whatever. It's just a book, there's no apps or anything else. If you want that stuff, you want a tablet. As for battery life, I've charged mine maybe 5 times since I got it. The only time you use the battery is when you turn it on, off, or change the page. With the wireless off it lasts me about a month. I only turn it on to buy more books so it's pretty easy. Built in dictionary is awesome too. Only worry is when I completely kill the battery, it takes a few minutes of being plugged in before it rights itself.

Oh yeah, as for selection, you probably won't have to worry about it on deployments. Someone will have collected thousands of books for you  :twocents:
