Cabela's gun counter
« on: June 13, 2012, 03:04:51 PM »
So I finally got into the Tulalip Cabela's today and went to the gun counter to try and find my Dad a new 22 and while they didn't have squat for left-handed guns in stock, they did have a scope I wanted to have a look at.

There was three people behind the counter, a youngish woman and two older guys. The woman was busily helping some guy who apparently was just going from left to right fondling every gun in the place while the two guys were busy holding a circle jerk behind the counter. After about ten minutes I asked if I could see a scope and got told by the woman that I could when she was done helping the guy who was looking at every gun in the place. The one dude I managed to ask wanted to know if I had taken a number...There was no one else at the counter! I told the guy that I didn't know that I needed to (no signs) and he frikking walked off! A couple minutes later he called some number a few times and then looked amazed that no one came running.

I did notice that their used guns were substantially more expensive than their new? WTF is up with that? Why would anyone buy "X" rifle with a $20 fishbonker strapped on top for $500 (used) when I could buy the exact same gun new for $379?

After this kind of experience I won't likely be visiting their gun counter again, anyone else besides "Stilly" have a bad experience?

I've been in twice into that area of the store. Once on a weekend, early morning, the second was afternoon on a weekday. I was never greeted anywhere.........never asked if I needed help (I was wandering around looking for primers with a confused look on my face)........and never spoke to until I got to the cashier. I would suggest they are very understaffed and what staff they have is very much lacking in courtesy and knowlege.

I have suggested to some friends that have not been there yet to not get to excited. It is a Cabelas wharehouse.........not a superstore.

+1. Customer service is definitely the weak link at Cabelas.

As far as the used guns, I asked them about the price disparity of used guns more  expensive than new. Aparently the people who buy used guns aren't the same people who order the new ones. Also it sounds like they don't communicate well with each other. Whatever the used guns wind up being bought for, they have a minimum markup as a corporate policy and have wound up with many used guns more expensive than retail.

Stood there squinting at the prices of the long guns behind the counter right in front (literally like 2 feet away) of 2 guys behind the counter having a "circle jerk" ( :chuckle: I like that). There were no other customers and They never said a word to me. I won't be back...

What a weird deal, the Lacey Cabela's has good service! I am betting there will be some turnover in the months to come.

Same issues at the Post Falls store in Idaho.  Customer service really sucks.  One of the guys who buys guns paid a guy $299.00 dollars for a used Ruger 10-22 stainless, and it was not a .22 magnum.  After he made the deal I told him about the same rifle I bought from Bi Mart brand new 2 weeks prior for $199.00 plus tax.  He made some comment about having to eat that one sometime down the line.  The person who sold the gun did not even buy another gun either he just walked out with his money.  I guess we might have some idea why there prices on used guns are so high.

For the issue of spending more on used vs new, are you referring to exactly the same (YEAR and model) or just model.  In my case, for many guns I'll look for older models because of material/manufacture technique.  Couple examples--Ruger 10/22 as mentioned: the older ones typically have all metal construction, new ones can have a lot of plastic (like even trigger group).  Rem 700 newer versions have plastic in areas that used to be metal (trigger gaurd).

Maybe they only pay their employees minimum wage. That is usually the case when costumer service is poor.
Thanks for the heads up tho, I haven't been there yet and won't be going in their any time soon and I live close.

I am talking about guns that are identical model to new ones on the other side of the room. We aren't talking about major differences.

Cabela's is very proud of their prices. They are way overpriced and I will never, ever buy any gun from them. Shop around my friend and save some money. Big R has some better deals than Cabela's.

Not sure why FC.    Now that I think about it, buddy of mine was getting a returned lever action Marlin .45-70 from the gun rack and the tag had a higher price than the new one behind the counter.  I know he asked about it, and they gave him some answer.  He ended up getting the returned one. :dunno:

My Dad really wanted to check out some left-handed guns but has now decided that he will just buy through Bud's, better prices and no BS.

I have noticed that as well. MAJOR UNEXPLAINABLE differences. before my bogus journey there, I asked one of them why I could buy a new beretta SP1 for $1900 or a used one for complete with scratches for $2200?.... WT F*&^
he told me they got all their guns from other cabela's locations, so that the other stores can marke the shipped guns as SOLD while at the same time contributing to the tulalip stores inventory.

someone's not stirring the Koolaid at the tulalip store, make the drive to Lacey, its more than worth the gas money.
