Olympic Quality Deer Muzzleloader Nov 1-23 Any Buck
« on: June 21, 2012, 02:44:44 PM »
I got drawn for the Olympic Quality Deer Muzzleloader Nov 1-23 Any Buck.  Never been in this unit before but put in for this hunt as I live in Pierce County and wanted to discover some new areas close to home.  Well, looks like I got my wish.   I am starting my research and wanted to see if anyone had some advice regarding this GMU.  I just went out and got a good map of the area and am looking to get out and do some scouting.  Any information from experienced hunters in GMU 621 would be greatly appreciated.  Looks like some pretty steep country with lots of thick vegetation.  Thanks in advance.

Some pretty cool country there. I've lived in Shelton my whole life and have never deer hunted the Olympic unit for deer. I've seen some decent bucks up there in August while bear hunting. Good luck, I'll bet its a fun hunt.

Blacktail rut- from what I can find, seems this hunt is likely to be smack-dab in the rut (weather dependent).  Anyone have input on the Blacktail rut in Western WA?

Look at the date on this trail cam picture I got last year- November 10th. I'd say that's about the peak of the rut. This was in Thurston county but it should be about the same.

Nice picture bobcat! That's awesome. Your hunt is definitely right in the middle of the blacktail rut. Find the does and you will find a buck!

Yeah.....get some!

I know it makes me a bit of a childish idiot but I think humping animal pics from trail cams are just to funny.

How is this unit during the general modern season?  It doesn't have a ML season so a friend talked me into getting a modern tag...

Other than scouting Christmas trees I have not been up there.

The unit is pretty big, alot of the clear cuts are crowded for the first week of the season and then it kinda tapers off. More people hunt the coyle unit from my experience. Our group hunts both units every year and as long as you put your time in you will see deer. using a bike is your best bet behind locked gates.

Great tag.  If I had this tag I would pound the 1st 2 weeks of the season.  Get one before the modern guys have their late season.  We've shot alot of bucks out of this unit.  Mostly on the West side of of the unit.  Did you also draw the multi season tag?

Johnr060- PM sent.  You're the man!!!

Lazydrifter,   I saw that there is a modern late overlap here...  Seems I would want to get in and out prior to that fiasco...  I did not put in for the multi season tag- blackpowder solomente!!!    I do recognize that this is a large unit and I am trying to do my homework before I start burning fuel.  Definately not posting here for someone to show me the honey hole... just want an orientation to the unit.  Thanks!
