one pin that doesn't work for you?

So I'm shooting a Matthews Dxt 29.5" 60 pound draw.  Spott hogg 5 pin (forget the model) sight, carbon express maxima arrows and muzzy mx3 broadheads.  I use a hindsight instead of a peep sight.  I can shoot 1-35 yards using my top pin.  I can shoot 50 yards accurately with my third pin down.  60 yards with my fourth and I've shot a few times at 70 with my fifth pin.

My problem is that for some reason my second pin down no matter if I try and move it or not I can't shoot 40 yards with it.  I don't know if I just can't focus my eyes on it or what exactly is going on.  I finally figured out that if I use my third pin (50) and aim low I will hit at 40 but it just doesn't make sense why that second pin won't work?

Any ideas or suggestions?

Do you wear glasses?  What is your arrows FOC?

Many people with the hindsight tend to focus off the target at some distances.  If you are shooting close with focus on one point and then further away focusing on a different point there will be a transition distance that gets confusing.

I know a guy that knows a guy that makes the worlds best peep sights.  I bet that would fix your problem

You should always set your pins in 10 yard increments, even if you think you can get away with one pin for a 20 yard gap, it will always screw you in the field. Your spot hogg is intended to be used so that the sight ring around the pins is perfectly centered and just inside the sight ring of your peep site. So one site aperture is slightly inside the other and then you just settle the pin you need. This keeps the anchor point consistent. If you try to center the pin inside the sight aperture then your anchor point will change with yardage, and can cause some inaccuracies.

This is my first year with this bow.  Last year I was shooting a fred bear and it was alot heavier and left some room for error.  Meaning, I didn't have to be so careful with proper shooting technique, breathing, and grip.
I was amazed how much all of that mattered when I went to the lighter matthews, all in all it has made me a better shooter.  I now really have to pay attention to what I'm doing.
When I first started shooting this bow I was trying to use the pins in ten yard incriments but the first 35 just wouldn't do it, it was to fast. 
I doubt it is my anchor point because I also use a kisser button to maintain the same shooting point every time.

Just a thought... maybe you have a bit of colorblindness for the color of your second pin.  Could mess up your focusing on it.  I don't know, just a thought, seems wierd though.

according to the army I wasn't colorblind, but what you are saying actually makes sense.  maybe not due to colorblindness but just my terrible vision (corrected of course).

I shoot an omen that IBO's at 362fps. My hunting setup shoots 310fps and I still start at 20yds and in 10 yd increments. yes the pins are close but not much more than slower bows. You cant cheat physics, start at 20 and end at 60 (if its a 5 pin). Practice at 60 so lesser yards are tighter. If you start shooting crappy, hang it up and try again later.

I  know my eyes love green pins. I shoot red at 60 yards and green at 70 yards. Seem to like the 70 yard shots better.

So you are shooting with glasses or are you laser corrected?  I would do a self eye exam at 30, 40 and 50 yards and see what that tells you. 

I never use a 20 yard pin and have not since about 1995.  I also never use the pin guard as a secondary alignment system.  Those who say that won't work might want to tell that to Randy Ulmer.  Last I checked he centered the pin and used a 20 yard pin gap.

The DXT is not an easy bow to shoot.  Those I know who still shoot it have gone to an aftermarket grip which has helped quite a bit.  I prefer Loesch for all my grips.

i cannot for the life of me shoot a red pin worth a damn! my eyes suck and i cant shoot with me glasses either. i did shoot with pins at 20-40-50-60... skipped 30 yard pin and killed a deer at 30 yards that year, so skipping a pin can work with faster bows. and practice. my sights now only alternate yellow and green pins.

Before I got glasses I had to do the same thing.  Every red pin looked like a cluster of three.  Drove me crazy but that's not a long putt.

I very much agree with bullfisher about practicing a lot at 60+ yards so lesser shots are tighter.  That's some good advise.

I just checked and my 40 pin is red as well, I'm going to try and change it out and see if that helps.  I'll let you know my findings.  thanks guys

Buy a single pin sight and sell the old one, problems solved.spot hogs are good sights but it you are having troubles focusing on the pins then get the single pin.
