Since you're dealing with elk hunters, I say 300 Ultra. It seems like the elk guys would prefer the 300 over the 7mm, and the Ultra over the WSM.

If this were somebody looking to put down their own money to buy the gun I would say 300 WSM. I don't think the Ultra offers enough of an advantage over the 300 WSM other than a slight trajectory differance. Even then only the long range guys would see the benefit of the Ultra.

Having said that, I have both. :chuckle: The WSM is a rifle and the Ultra mag is a pistol.

Ill take a 7 ultra.  :chuckle:

 :yeah:

For popularity at a fundraiser, I would go with the 300 short mag
Duck Buster
Mule Deer Hunter
Turkey Camp Cook

Why a Short or a Ultra and not just the 300 win mag? Just curious.

Even though I shoot and love my 300 rum I would have to say 300 wsm just because the recoil diffrence ...... it works out for everyone in the recoil area atleast and still has some thud behind it

we all ready have a 300 win mag so we are going to something else.  i am leaning toward the rum in 300.  thanks for the help.  more stuff is welcomed.  the whole deal is to sell tickets and give the lucky winner a nice elk rifle that will last the rest of his/her life, and might be passed down to his or her heirs.  mike w,  by the way our rmef  banquet is feb. 2 in moses lake and if you want to go pm me and we can arrange it, thank you for watching.

The .300 Ultra is a bruiser cartridge and 90 percent of your hunters can't handle the recoil of one. I can't even count the number of them I have seen return to shops shortly after being purchased. Consignment, traded back or sold back. If a pool of average hunters were involved I would think the 300 WSM would be more desirable.

That is very true, and I suspect if you ball and dummied 100 big game hunters you would find quite a few that flinch with a 300 magnum of any variety. Taking advantage of the RUM's additional power is not easy. The WSM can be more accurately shot by more hunters in my opinion.

But look at it this way: with a RUM you get the added benefit of using empty cartridge cases for coffee mugs.

Hell, if you want horsepower, toss a 416 meteor in the mix. I would buy a 375 ultra.....if more guys knew the accuracy potential of the 375......it would be the new elk master.
