More Toutle success

Well last night was the night, headed out into a clearcut about 5 and sure enough there was a small herd of about ten elk. With a little 4x5 bull, fog was rolloing in pretty good so it was hard to stay on them. Watched for about 15 minutes to figure out which way they were headed, not really moving I decided to move down the road about 20 yards to the last tree available for cover, and that was all I needed. There were four cows feeding 50 yards below me and they didn't have a clue I was there. The cows then spooked a little and when the fog lifted I saw the bull come out from behind the only tree in the clearcut. It took me four or five tries to get my rangefinder to pick him up due to the fog, 74 yards. Yeah I took the shot and smoked him, complete pass through double lung shot, he made it 40 yards before pilling up. Not the biggest bull I've seen up there but its my first archery kill and what a rush that was.

I was hunting with my dad, but I had more help available. It was a 4 1/2 mile pack out all downhill but the trip in was a killer.

Good job, good looking bull! What did you think of the Toutle unit now after hunting it?

Not impressed with what was open, too many people for not enough land. The unit would be great if they opened more gates and spread the people out a little. But all in all it worked out for me so I can't complain much, all I can say is good luck to anyone else who has the tag.

Just wondering, I've hunted the unit most of my life and there was alot pre-season talk of the unit, just curious of what you thought.
Your absolutely right about the access, Signal peak to Spud mountain country is where the majority of the archery hunters hunt. The rest of the unit which is where some of the better bulls are is all locked up behind Weyco gates. Permit holders should be allowed motor vehicle access on the Mt. St. Helens tree farm.
