I have always pulled my cards and used a card reader, I have several friends that have had issues loading from the camera so I never got in that habit. Multi card readers can be found for $10-$15My 400D has a CF card. Are you saying that loading from the camera causes premature wear or eventually ruins something? $10-15 for a card reader is definitely cheaper than a new camera but I've been using the cable for the camera for years without problems.

Shouldn't be an issue with wear. I've noticed it myself, my computer(s) wont recognize the hard wired USB connection to several cameras. But sometimes they do.But every computer seem to recognize a card reader.
