Not to side track but I wonder how well this would work around structures like a cabin... As in how long the cotton balls would last before having to be replaced

If it’s a getaway cabin I’d use pure peppermint like ghost said, and would use tampons to hold more liquid.

I will give it a try for sure. Last summer I fought mice and worked hard at closing up as many entry spots as I could but I am sure there are more. Any additional ways to help fend them off I am all about.

Vanderman

We use three methods and we are making serious headway at our cabin.

1.  Mothballs.....lots and lots of mothballs.  They are cheap and they work.
2.  Poison (just one bite).  You can buy it locally at Coastal Farm and Ranch
3.  Rodent spray (which has peppermint and other smells / deterrents).  We spray this all over our quads, SxS, Tractor ect. to keep the wires from getting chewed.  We buy it by the gallon on amazon.

10-4

I have poison outside and traps inside. Hoping to add another layer of defense when I get up there here soon and see how that goes. The peppermint oil idea sounds like it could be beneficial

This nice weather is perfect for doing a little tent maintenance.

Got # 2 tent out today.
Bought it from buddy in 2015. It’s Ben in the field 60 days a year ever since.

Not too bad for a nine year old tent. Shows what a little love and care does in protecting your investment. The doors get most the dirt from dirty hands.

Of coarse you have to teach your helpers to not step on the canvas during set up or down.
Boot. Tracks are a bugger to clean,if you can get them clean.

And not to drag it through the dirt and mud.

Got a couple spots to scrub, but not too bad.

Your tents look great, I’m sure it’s on this thread but what’s your process for spot cleaning?

I have used different things. Trying not to mess with the treatment’s.

I have in the past used Dawn dish soap.
This time I used Folex Capet Cleaner. Soft bristle brush.

Most my cleaning is spot cleaning. It’s thousand times easier to try to keep the tents clean than to clean them later.

When we set them up I lay a ground tarp next to the frame ,lay the tent unrolled on tarp, pull over frame. I try to never let the canvas touch the ground. Once set up they get a rain fly I made over them. The main purpose is to protect the roofs and channel water away from tent sides. Rain running off eves makes a mess on tent sides.

At home in summer I set up.
Hose down with cold water. You wouldn’t believe the dust that washes off with a hose and nozzle.
Then I inspect for dirty spots, scrub with cleaner and rinse, right away, repeat if needed.
I never let cleaners or soap sit long on tents.
Sun dry for two or three days.

Inspect for loose threads. Snip and seal with super glue.

I see your location is Rathdrum. Got a buddy who moved there some years ago. He drew a Moose tag for area 1. I will be over there in November. Going to set up a camp for him to hunt out of.

What may be a good option for a wrap on a wood stove pipe at the stove jack exit. I have a 5 inch stove jack with a 4 inch pipe. I love my tent setup and everything about it. The only hickup is the little bit of a gap for water to come in at the stove jack during heavy rains. Any ideas?

I just use aluminum foil inside and out. My stove jack is in the sidewall.

Well I have not had a big issue with that, but I have 5 inch both. I made an oversized rain fly and when the stove flap is open it channels water either side ,but till get a little.

I think I would try to adapt my stove to five inch. :dunno:

Looking good Ghosthunter.  I do something very similar to this.  I have a spare tent frame we set up in front of the tent as you did.  we can put end to end tables under with stoves utensiles etc makes a great camp kitchen and storage area.  Takes about 30 feet to set it up but its comfortable.

Yeah we have used a tent frame before when we only needed two tents, we also use a hub shelter sometimes for small camps. We didn’t want to take the full 20 ft cook shack to moose camp. So three tents and half cook shack. Saves a little space in the utility trailer.

When you have three tents, it’s a constant problem with camp mates mixing up each tents support equipment. Likes hammers, tent stakes, stove pokers etc. I want to grab a tent box when I only need one and know what I need to set the tent up is in the box.

So I color coded the boxes and their equipment.

Blue hammer ,blue box
Green poker green box etc.

Makes for a happy life on set up day.

So, just to clarify; you have one tent, poles, stakes, and all the misc. items to set up that tent in one box (×3)?  I have two wall tents, and one fairly big cook shack (16'×18') and I think if I put one entire "camp" in a box, it would be a bugger for me to pick up and put in the truck.  I have each tent, and the cook shack/poles separately stored in their own boxes, with some small misc. stuff, but nothing else is on the box.  Those boxes are big and heavy, and about all I want to throw up into the bed of the truck.  I keep all the stakes, extra line, hammer(s), stake puller, etc. in another container or two. Just curious.
