Broadhead Test
« on: December 06, 2015, 07:01:46 PM »
Couple buddies down at Sportco(archery dept) have been doing a little broadhead testing. Mainly testing sturdiness, deflection and penetration via shooting them from a 60lb compound into a sheet of 5/8" plywood at a 45* angle.
Interesting that some of them would not penetrate at all.
I took a few down today for them to shoot: Slick Trick Razor Trick, Viper Trick and Slick Trick Mag and a Trocar tipped Grave Digger. All Slick Tricks penetrated until the vanes caught in the plywood with "0" damage to anything plus they spin tested them afterward - perfect.  The Grave Digger did the same but with a slight wiggle on spin testing. Kind of gives a guy confidence in what he's using.
For the results of all of them that Sportco tested, I'll let you visit and ask the folks in the archery dept. I don't want to be the guy bad mouthing somebody's favorite broadhead.

I plan on testing some heads after the ATA show.  I would like to video and show the results.

I know we don't usually shoot plywood out hunting but the question came up a few times concerning some mech designs opening on raking shots etc especially if bone was contacted. Deflection off bone was also a concern and badly bent ferules was one of my concerns since a badly bent ferule could drastically change the direction of penetration. This actually happened to some of the broadheads they tested (that I wouldn't mention) plus a couple didn't even penetrate the 5/8" plywood.

We should shoot cement blocks for no other reason than I like to see arrows just smashed into pieces.

I'm in as long as we're using your arrows and broadheads.

Use Magnus Black Hornets and damage the head they will replace them for free. (one of the many reasons I am shooting them) I did shoot ST Standards prior and for the most part was happy with them.
Avid ARCHERY deer and elk hunter.

Would an honest person really send back a broadhead they destroyed on purpose?

Correction:
The Grave Digger ferule "did not" bend as originally thought. I install tiny O-rings so indexing the broadhead is easy. Come to find out, the o-ring split making the head wobble at Sportco. When I got home and removed the broken o-ring, the head was perfect.
I'm going to resharpen it and use it again.
