257 weatherby?
« on: September 23, 2017, 06:55:57 AM »
Good morning ladies and gents. Wanted to get some feed back about the 257 weatherby if any of you have any? I have the chance to get a decent deal on a remington 700 in 257 weatherby with a 26" fluted barrel and a nice walnut stock that is in great shape. It has not had the recall done so I would have to send it in for that. I know it is expensive to shoot and I'm ok with that I guess but balistically it has my interest. I also see there is some Weatherby select ammo in this caliber in the 100gn spitzer that is typically under $40 a box, any of you have any experience with this ammo? Thanks for your feed back!

Probably one of my favorite calibers. Mine shoots cloverleafs with 65 grains of IMR 4831 pushing a 110 accubond. It also likes the 115 grain barnes tsx. Ballistically its hard to beat. I killed a bull elk with mine just fine. Light recoil for a mag, my 10 year old shoots it just fine and no need for a brake. As far as cost to shoot, I like to reload I don't pay too much attention, it doesn't get shot enough to worry about. Id say if its a deal go for it, if you're gonna pass and its a REAL good deal send me a PM :chuckle:

I bought a 257 Wby for my wife to hunt with. I was planning on getting something different like a 25-06 or 6.5x55, but stumbled across a deal too good to pass up.  It is light enough recook that she enjoys shooting it, yet it still has enough energy to kill an elk. I reload and found brass in sale, so shooting it isn't too expensive. I have found it is a finicky to find a good load, but once you do, it's a tack driver. It does a fair amount of damage for whitetail sized animals because of the velocity. That is my only real complaint. But that is the trade off for getting the higher velocity. Overall I think it's a decent choice for a lower recoil rifle that can take down deer and elk. If I was only going to hunt deer I may choose something different just due to the increased meat damage.
