Unit 328 late season
« on: May 10, 2020, 08:50:23 PM »
I was going thru the regs today and the Dept looks to have once again stuck it to the colockum archery guys. So not only have they made antlerless draw only ( with 2 separate seasons so double the app money ) there is no longer a general late season for 328! WTH?
It must be do to all those hundreds of true spikes the late archers are killing up there.  :bash: :bash: :bash:

I couldn't be happier.  8). And yes I was happy to apply for both permits. If I do happen to draw it will be a quality experience and not a circus.

I noticed that too.

Last late archery elk season was the only time I’d ever been up there during that time of year. I can’t imagine why they would remove that season. I didn’t find any elk in the unit even though others did. I did find some else where though.

So you are happy about them taking a season away out of the blue for no reason except you think it might allow you a better experience but to heck with everyone else? Wow! Just for reference, I very seldom even hunt this unit during late seasons, but I have been archery hunting the Colockum every year since the early 80’s and this late season has always been an opportunity for archers and to have it taken away along with all the other things we have lost is ridiculous!

I wouldn't be too happy about closing a general season either, but I totally get lemondogs last sentence.  It can be a total zoo with so many archers stuck into so few late units, but with a permit in your pocket and with a very limited number of permit holders, it could be a great hunt.  At this point we're stuck with what is written down, so I'd tend to be as optimistic as possible too.

The season wasn't "taken away out of the blue for no reason." The season was taken away for the same reason they took away 65 and older antlerless tags, youth antlerless tags and significantly cut all other antlerless hunts in this area, they are worried about the health of the Colockum herd and the lack of calf recruitment. Do I think that this was caused by drastically over issuing antlerless tags it the last few years? Yes, piss poor management. Do I think this is from poor predator management? Yes. Allowing archers to have an open season on antlerless early and late for several years? Yes. Add up all these factors among others and you don't have a sustainable model.

Duckhunter14,   My post wasn’t so much complaining about them going to a draw only for antlerless for the Colockum as much as it is about them totally eliminating the general late hunt for this unit. I would be surprised if the true spike harvest for this late season couldn’t be counted on one hand, and the harvesting of a few yearling bulls has absolutely no effect on the size and health of this herd!

Put the gates in and eliminate the “off season “ harvesters would help much more.

Man I have said that for years. It sure would add to the pack out but would probably keep 90% of the people from going. Especially all of those that have the ability to hunt year round

I feel like they snuck this one in. I don’t remember anything about eliminating the late season hunt in the proposed regs.  Was this in there the whole time or was it a last minute change based on comments at the meetings?

From the summary sheet of the meeting on April 10th it appears that they had 328 crossed out for the late season.
