Best Revolver cartridge?
« on: October 16, 2020, 12:10:09 PM »
okay I was wondering if there was one caliber that edges out all the others as a general purpose round. Bad guy protection, animal protection, hiking and hunting I like the 44mag but I think the 357mag might have the edge as a all around  cartridge. What are your thoughts.

If your not worried about conceal carry.....I would consider the 454 casull which you can shoot 45 long colt out of.  454 for back woods predator defense and 45 long colt for bad guy protection.

With that said....if you are looking to conceal carry a revolver, I would look at the .357 that can also shoot .38.  All are sufficient for bad guys but some are better big critters, depending on where you plan to carry it and hunt.

I went .357, it seems to be the sweet spot and that round also seems to outperform it's paper specs.  I might have to think about it for elk or bear, but then again I would have to think about why I would want to even consider such a thing.

You can reasonably shoot small barrel, lightweight .357 where the .44 and larger require more gun and are really not fun in compact versions for hiking and concealed carry.

If it was strictly for hunting or get around AK bears I would go bigger (probably 12 gauge 18" barrel), but for all around lower 48 stuff, I like .357.

True but I wouldn't want to depend on a 454 to stop a Grizzly in its tracks nor a 12 gage or 45-70 and most people can't or won't shoot a 454 so for general purpose I still think the 357 has the edge very wide power range, amo excesibility short barrel to long barrel to carbine same with the 44mag but I still think the edge goes to the 357

Or a .460 s&w which can shoot all 3.  That kind of versatility is nice in times like these when ammo availability is crap.

I have had many 22,357,44 and now 9 mm's over the years .
Now carry a SW 69 mostly in the woods.
Small frame, easy to carry and will handle everything from plinking and shot loads to "oow that hurt" stuff.

Unless you were going to be in Grizzly country, in a revolver, I'd probably opt for one of the 8 shot 357's.

Leaving big bears off the table, I really think a .44 special checks a lot t of boxes. I also think that if a guy were utterly proficient with a ruger Blackhawk .45 colt with a shorter barrel that could almost be perfect
nuke the gray whales for jesus!
