Idaho Unit 3 moose
« on: May 20, 2023, 10:32:10 AM »
My lucky bugger brother drew one of the unit 3 tags. We know a few places in the unit we’ve seen moose, but any additional info would be greatly appreciated - this will be a first moose hunt for us both. We’ll be truck camping during the hunt staying within a few miles of the rig it’ll likely be just the 2 of us packing out if we have luck (both of us have packed elk out solo). We’ll be scouting hard until the season any pointers or jumping off points would be humbly appreciated! Thanks and happy hunting!

Call them to the road, then shoot. Makes a nice, easy pack out. Congrats on the draw, you guys will have a blast

Don't be or get discouraged with any early scouting expeditions.  Moose do not like heat, and are highly nocturnal through the summer months.  Kinda makes sense since they are black and have long heavy coats right?    Focus your scouting efforts on habitat, access, etc, not animals spotted.

My gut from hunting around the area is that you would want to avoid the southern part of the unit, not many moose and certainly not big bulls.  The northern part of the unit is more likely to produce a decent bull.  I've seen a couple real dandies standing IN the little north fork of the coeur d'alene river, which is technically unit 3.  I personally think this it a tough hunt for a big bull, but you shouldn't have a problem finding A bull.  Good luck!

:yeah:  I never did see many bulls when scouting for my moose and my wifes moose hunts, got to know the area.  Then when the rut kicked in, that's when we saw them.

That is a good time of year to hunt them.  They will be out feeding on the last of the brush.  Stay mobile and glass every clearcut, natural opening you can.  You will have more areas to glass on the north side of the freeway.  The southside is pretty overgrown.

i’m mulling the idea of buying an atv or utv just for this hunt (then selling afterwards). it’s not my style of hunting i prefer backcountryish for elk and deer, but i’m hearing from a lot of folks that moose hunting is better done with a lot of driving/spotting and a little hiking, and that bulls might be heading above the snow line nov 1-14. i have a toyota tacoma - what do you guys think? tacoma vs atv/utv?

I would use both.  Invest in chains for the truck and use the atv when the snow gets too deep or you don’t feel comfortable driving the road. You might get lucky and have no snow.  You definitely want to be mobile because they will be out foraging.
