I've never actually tried to call in bears. How often do you spot a bear and then start calling hoping to bring them closer? And out of those times how often do they respond and come into your set? We usually just spot and stalk. It gets scary sometimes when they disappear on you... 😆

I average a bear called in about every 20 hours or so of calling.  I call non-stop for about an hour every time I set up.  The fastest I have had them show up is a little under 10 minutes.  I've never called to a bear I could see, always cold calling.  However, I did once call to a bear that crossed the road in front of my truck and he did come back and stand up.  I like to call when there is a LOT of fresh sign, but if an area looks good or has plenty of food, I'll set up and call.  I put a watch out in front of me so I can keep an eye out on how long I've been calling.

Thanks to everyone who's kept this thread alive. I've been out a couple of times this year with a FoxPro. No luck yet, but I'm going to stay after it until the season closes.

I used to bring in owls while calling at night, quite a few times.  A bit scary when it first happens!

We did some calling sets while checking trail cams a few weekends ago. Called in a bunch of crows and nothing else...they seemed pissed they couldn't find the dying rabbit!

Grabbed an SD card and walked back up to the closed logging road and started a call set. Look at the most recent photo first and this big bear was in there 15 minutes before I checked the card. Still didn't come into the call.

Definitely have had birds come in interested.  And just had an experience a few weeks ago of trying to call in a bear I had seen and having a different one come in an unexpected position.  We both were surprised, and no shot was to be had.

Nothing seems very predictable in the ways bears will behave to calls.  I have to think they're smart too - that bear that came in to my call that I didn't expect might avoid it text time.  But who knows - they're bears!

I’ve made about 15 stands so far this year at about 40 minutes each.

Using the fox pro. Have tried fawn in distress and rabbit as sounds. Have mixed both sounds as well when not getting anything going.

What are your opinions on running fawn in distress for 3 minutes then 2 minutes off and after about 20 minutes of that switching to rabbit for 30 minutes if nothing appears to be going on?

I have a hunch that many are calling to bears that don't exsist in the area. Just like coyotes I use to call areas that had no coyotes. Now I howl and bait to find active coyote locations before hunting. Outside of cameras and chance encounters finding active locations is tough.

I’ve got a spot I’ve seen a bear both times I’ve been in the area in the morning, I’m thinking I need to do some calling. Especially since the berries failed up here this summer, has to be a little extra hungry.😉

The wife and I were out trying to fill her rifle deer tag yesterday. Came across some really good fresh sign from a bear eating mushrooms. Made a half assed call set and called in a really nice fat bear to about 30 yards. I was standing up on a stump and had a great show but the wife was below me and never could get a could shot. We thought he was going to pop up at about 20 yards but he ended up turning and getting a little down wind from us and out of our lives.

3rd bear I have called in and by far the biggest. The two smaller bears I called in came running this one never made a sound and snuck in through dry leaves like you wouldn’t believe. If I would have been sitting on the ground I would have had no idea he came in at all. I could have grabbed the rifle and smoked him but I wanted the wife to shoot it as it would have meant more for her. She loves killing bear. Pretty cool experience anyway.

What a cool thread. I have a bear tag this year and have not given it much thought but was thinking to grab a call today and give this a try this weekend. I am a little nervous though being the pray as one guy stated on here. I'm gonna hunt local in the units west of Yakima. If anyone has any simple pointers on the type of call to buy etc. please let me know. Again, very cool thread and it made me wonder what the heck happened to Bangoskank!

He still lurks around here and on other forums. I get a text from him still every now and again and usually exchange bear pictures each year. He is a predator calling machine!
 I think he just kind of got tired of some of the drama, some Caused by all of us and I’m sure some Caused by him as well(we’ve all had one too many drinks to be commenting at one point or another). I know some have drifted off or stopped posting pictures because it seems like some people on here like to accuse people of poaching if they are successful early in the season or they shoot a two point within 50 miles of the Pacific crest Trail, etc. some may be say these things because they’re jealous or maybe some of these people are Game warden’s and they’re just genuinely suspicious of all of us but either way it doesn’t help people sharing stories or pictures if they think they’re gonna be accused of something. Not saying that’s what happened to Bango but it is the case for a few others I know

Thanks Hillhound! Yea I seem to recall lots of bear calling threads and pictures with Bango in what looked like a leather jacket and bandana. Borderline legendary!
