Pointing Lab Breeder Experiences

[Please... hold your commentary around "pointing" - seen it all]

Looking for experiences folks have with owning, interacting with, hunting over any of the labs from regionally local pointing lab breeders / kennels. We're looking for a family dog that is a great companion first and good bird drive second. We live a stones throw from a release / training site and pheasant will be the primary birds the pup will be hunted over. Duck, Quail, Grouse in the mix as well.

Specifically looking for experience with any of the following (but open to hearing about others):

• Morgan's Point Ranch - (Addy, WA) Jim and Andrea Morgan
• Kreger Lake Kennels (Moses Lake, WA) - Jeremy & Tonya Richards
• High Desert Labs (Richland, WA) - Tim & Kristine Kopf
• Rocky Point Kennels (Billings, MT) - Christopher & Jenna Schmit

There are a few others (Tiger Mountain, SkyRiver, etc.) as well.

I have a friend who has a one from Morgans point ranch who loves their dog.
Also I believe a member on here (Birdguy) has a male that used to be a guest sire there (my apologies if i am mistaken), i got my dog from him.  While I never trained her to hunt, she's the best, sweetest, smartest dog i've had.
Our boarding place who used to board the Seattle PD dogs, says her nose is 10x better than any dog they used to use.

Wow, I've had two dogs from Tiger Mountain and couldn't be happier - both great dogs.

My pup was from Tiger Mountain.  He was deemed a "flusher" so we knew he wasn't going to have the best nose.  Had bad knees, expensive fix.  But, he has been a duck machine and would literally kill himself retrieving.

I know the Richards from Kreger Lake kennels, and they have a great program!  Their red stud dog Chesney just passed the APLA Triple Crown.     They would be my first choice. 

Morgans Point has gone more towards doodles. They are also very restrictive on breeding rights.

High Desert Labs doesn't title their dogs, and their lines come from a breeder in Tonasket that I feel is questionable.   

I am not familiar with the other kennel. 

I don't consider myself a breeder, but I do have a litter of Chocolate pointing labs planned for spring.  Ollie is a 4XGMPR, HRCH, and MH,  Gracie is a CPR.  Both are OFA certified, and genetically tested.

On our second black male from Tiger Mt. kennels. I didn't think we could get a better pup than our last one, but I have been impressed.

My lab was out of Tiger Mt and he was the best dog I've ever had. He made it to 13 years old. Never had an issue health wise, excellent hunter and even better with the family. Had to put him down in July.  :'(

I have/had three from East Harbor Gun Dogs John Farrow. Amazing hunting dogs. Bird seeking missiles. I am thoroughly impressed, which is why I have had three (one passed, still have two youngins). Super loving dogs.

Two things I am not impressed with:
Don't point worth a darn. Definitely flushers haha. That doesn't bother me though.
Their coats are thin. Really thin. It is a bear to keep them warm while duck hunting. Upland fine, but cold water plunges require a proopane heater.

I’d like to bump this back up and see if there is anymore input. I’m in the same boat as the OP and am considering picking up a pup this fall or winter. My current lab is 8 so I’d like to get a pup coming along. Any experience with Skyriver, Clockum Gun Dogs, or more experiences with High Desert Labs? Thanks!

  Expect my dog points just fine. I have a coworker that owns 3 more dogs from John and another coworker that has one. All are great hunters, just thinned coated where it's hard to hunt late season waterfowl on the Eastside unless you have a heated blind.

I'm looking at a chocolate pointing lab for my son. He has wanted a chocolate lab for several years and we are now in the position to allow him to get one. He is 15 and already got a job to save up and buy his dog.

Try clover creek kennels. They do show dogs but have field lines as well!

I've had four pointing labs so far. My first (Tonka) was out of Trieven in Wyoming (fantastic, large, male, more of a duck dog). My second (Giddy) was from Tiger Mtn. lines (sweet, mid-sized female, did not point well, had health issues, but became a solid duck dog). My last two have come out of Colorado--one from KB Kennels (Daisy); the other out of Bearpoint (Goose). Both are from Bearpoint lines. The last two have been absolute pointing machines! And I will be going back to Colorado to get my next when the time comes.
