What about this video has you losing confidence in waterfowl hunting?
(I would say in "our sport", but I thought you gave up waterfowling?)

Young kid made a mistake.
He owned it in the video.
He paid a substantial fine ($3,300 for some geese).
He loses hunting privileges for 1 year.

Most of us have made mistakes.    I have.

What would you have handled differently?

Good job taking his lumps and hopefully saving someone from making the same mistake.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

Took his guns, courts dates, and lawyers just for some local geese when open for season just happens not to be that field. I could understand if hunting in the month of May but way of an over reach especially if clean record.  Should have just been ticketed and birds confiscated.  Loses year of hunting when people run stop signs, accidentally kill people, and just get a ticket as long as they aren’t intoxicated!

Whether a person hunts or not it’s our sport, just common knowledge. then you ask me how I would handle it?

I hear the video differently. Sounds like he was given a $200 or $300 ticket and would lose his license for a year. He didn't want to lose his license, so he took it to court which means the judge now has full authority to tack on additional penalties, which he did. In most states the ticket fines are at a lower level to essentially have the person settle the case without going to court.

I don't know SD law, but in most states if the offense requires a license suspension it cannot be waived by a judge. He should have paid his ticket and sat out for a year. Instead now he has to pay lawyer fees, a significantly higher fine, and still sit out for a year.

I think the other thing in play here is it’s not Washington state. I applaud other states for handing out stiffer penalties for infractions. I think more of that here would get the word out to others not to do it.

Sounds like a simple mistake that cost some time and money. No foul play on court's side as it didn't seem they were intetested in hammering this fella. By the book as it should be. LEO has to be careful giving grace. Although it stings, betcha this young fella is thankful that his game department is doing what he pays for.

I agree.

In this video the kid even said he's become friends with that game warden that got him.
He was sheepish about his mistake - as I would be.
Seems like the right outcome.

We can’t miss the point he made at the end of the video.  One side of the road you can face gun confrontation, lose hunting privileges, court dates, lawyer fees, tickets, and possibly more.  But on the other side you are good but changes every year.  I feel bad for landowners that could face the same harsh punishment while their neighbors are legal but last year all landowners in the area were open to hunt possibly.  Don’t need to understand anything to say that’s messed up.

But there has to be a line.  Close to the line doesn’t mean it’s okay to hunt.

I get the frustration of a moving target every year. Fishing in Washington rules change by the day but you have to follow the rules.

He broke the law and took his lumps. I'm not seeing any issue here :dunno:

Most game management unit boundaries involve roads so obviously one side is open and one side may be closed. It's all in black and white in states rules and regs. They aren't hard to decipher.  If you can read, you can figure out what's open and what's closed.

Not trying to be rude hdshot but literally all you do on this forum is post anything doom and glume you can find on waterfowl hunting and complain about your ex partner. If you think it's really that bad then find another hobby. You can choose to be a glass half full kind of guy or a glass half empty.  Life is too short to be a glass half empty type of person. Please for your own health find something that makes you a glass half full kind of human :twocents:

I’m not arguing about he broke the law, just too harsh of a penalty on Canada geese that could cause a deterrent for new people wanting to start hunting especially the ones with no help from other hunters that know and understand how it works.  But if you read would have also noticed didn’t mention anybody I have hunted with or not and ticketed with clean record would have been sufficient.   Don’t know how mentioned landowners got mixed up with a former hunting partner?

Read almost any thread you've ever started or participated in and your ex partner is mentioned like 75%+ of the time. Maybe not this thread specifically but a vast majority of the time. You're incredibly negative about waterfowl hunting and seem to look for anything to blame besides yourself. We are masters of our own destiny. You can complain and blame or you can grab your shotgun and go kill birds. It's that simple. Does it take a bit more effort than it used to? Maybe. But there's endless amounts of opportunity on public land there for those willing to go and get it. Full stop.

It’s not a deterrent to new people hunting. When someone takes hunter ed, it’s harped on to read the regs, read the regs, read the read the regs every year! I watched that video last week. He’s a good kid & he knows he made a mistake, one that’s easy to avoid. I’m pretty confident he’ll read the regs every year, from now on.
