I am a newbie and don't have any stories to tell so I will just tell you bout my gun. It is a savage edge accutrigger in 06. It was a graduation gift.(when I graduated college this last spring) I have been laid off for two years so didn't have much money for optics so I bought a BSA Deer hunter 3-9X40. I have put about 50 rounds down range gettin it broke in, plus I usually shoot pistols so the rifle to me was a whole new animal. I have it dialed in pretty well I didnt measure but I'd say I put 3 with in an inch at 100 but my buddy said to get it sighted in at 200 and I did about the same. I plan on using 180 grain corelokt cartridges. I am always open to learning from the more seasoned hunters so comments are welcomed just remember I am new to hunting and rifles.

why all the haters?

nice gun...  and 30 cals have been used for deer long before the 300 rem ultra...

just choose the right bullet for the game and your good to go.

can easily reload and turn it into a 300 win or something similar.   :twocents:

I like it. But just be sure to not take any shot that is less than 400 yards. Otherwise you're defeating the entire purpose of having such a rifle.  ;)

I like to switch it up every year or two.  This year will be Rem. 700 in 7mm rem mag.

There is no such thing as overkill,  and to the post that said the .300 win mag picked up the deer and threw it 10 - 15 yards,   I presume this was a joke but in case it wasn't.   No it didn't.

Ruger 77 in .243  Plain Jane- wood stock and 22" barrel with a burris 3x9 scope.  Factory winchester ammo (the cheap silver box) shoots great!  My wife and I both use this gun for deer.

This year, since I like throwing deer 10-15 yards I'm going with the 26" 300 win mag heavy barrel on my T/C Encore. Since I'm a sissy it has a muzzle brake, but since I'm not a sissy I'm shooting handloaded 180 grain Accubonds.

Steyr Prohunter in 300 Win mag with a Leupold 3-10X50 Vari X III.  Never have lost much (if any) meat due to blood shot or large holes blown thru a deer........

My primary is an early Ruger M77 with a tang safety, I shoot handloads and it does not have a brake, what does that make me?  :chuckle:

I always get a kick out of guys who think a gun like a 300 RUM will "blow up" a deer. You really think its that different than a smaller caliber gun? I've seen doe antelope killed with a 338-378 weatherby, right behind the shoulder (like it should be) and it was no different than if you were shooting a 270.

I shoot a 300 Weatherby Mark V with a Swarovski Z6 3-18X50. I have never "blown up" a deer. A bear I killed last year at 40 yards did have a big exit would but I shot it through the neck as it was standing up looking at me, a spine is like a 12 gauge shotgun inside an animal if you hit it from 40 yards.

I have a 257 Weatherby as well but its not as fun as the 300

I agree its defintiely BS that a 300 mag picked up a deer and threw it. I remember thinking that was possible back when I was a kid though.
