First beaver of the season
«
on:
November 17, 2011, 10:45:16 PM »
Finally put out 2 traps on a property in Maytown and the next morning I had a small beaver. It builds confidence to catch one on the first night. Good thing it was a small one, too. I think I'm the slowest skinner/flesher in the world. I hope the picture comes through.....I've been tryin to figure this cellphone camera thing out all day.

Hey! Another one today---2 beavers in 2 days! It's been a while since that happened. Last year I caught a total of 10 for the whole season. So far, so good.

I just grind up a bunch of castors in an old blender and mix in some mineral oil to make a nice, greasy paste. I usually throw a couple handfuls of mud, leaves, and goop from the creek into the back of the trap, but these were bare naked traps set in the spot where they were already traveling. I put a gob of castor paste in the back of the trap. It only took a couple of minutes to make each set.

TG22,
Yes those are Hav-a -hart traps. Model 1081. 15X15X36ish. I got these at the Darigold farm store for about 90 bucks each. Personally, I've had good luck w/ them but I hear bad reports about them from almost everybody else. Hannibal is the pro-- I would ask his opinion.
