Not Colockum, but Bumping!!! How did that happen?
« on: July 07, 2012, 04:17:01 PM »
Well, just got the special permit in the mail.  I swear, when I looked on the website, it said I was drawn for Colockum.  Now it says Bumping.  Rechecked the website, and it says Bumping as well.  It was my first choice, so I'm not really complaining.  I figure if I had gotten my first choice, I should not have misread it.  I did just buy a Colockum area map and got lots of good advice from other HuntWa members.

So now, I get to see who all else will be up there with me hunting cows or bulls.  I know already where I'll be hunting.  Just wanted to know if I would have any company.  I'll be hiking into wilderness area about 1.5 miles off Highway 12.  For the people that know the area, you'll probably know where I'm talking about.

Good luck, I will be in the colockum looking for spikes during general archery.  If I strike out in the early season I can at least hunt cows in the late season also unless the wolves have them running crazy.

Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

good luck and happy hunting.  Almost hit a dozen or so cows last august driving up bumping for some last minute scouting so should be fun and quick. :dunno: :chuckle:  Unless you're gonna hold out for the biggest fattest cow you can find

Man, I must suck!  In the 8 years (2002 to 2009) I hunted Bumping for cows and spikes I only shot 3.  It was my first 8 years hunting elk so maybe the learning curve contributed to my less than 100% success rate.

3 out of 8 is better than the harvest statistics.  I've only killed 2 elk out of 8 years of hunting elk.  One was a muzzleloader cow in blues, the other a rifle bull in Montana.

Not sure where you're going but your distance from 12 sounds good.  I didn't see all the cows in a group and they were all in 3's and 4's when I seen them.  Last trip out ran into 2 cows and followed them for a bit before breaking off and headed back out.  I seen most of them towards the evening and wasn't really looking forward to packing them out all by myself in that area with light diminishing very fast but they won't be so lucky this year since I've cut down on some extra baggage I was carrying. :chuckle:

How can you bump a colockum tag to a two spike only?  I'd like to upgrade too.
