Bear taste ??
« on: July 17, 2012, 06:34:37 PM »
Any body know if there is a big difference in the taste of Bear taken on the west side vs the east side of the big rocks?  :dunno:

Just wandering if the weather effects the flavor or texture any.

Bear meat "flavor" tends to reflect what its diet predominantly consists of. It its eating mostly salmon it will taste like fish. If its berries it will have that berry flavor to it. Lord please give me another huckleberry fed bear!

Back around '83 we shot a 500# bear that had been working between an old garbage dump and a skunk cabbage filled swamp.  It smelled so bad I had the whole thing ground figuring I could make sausage or spaghetti if it tasted much like it smelled.  It was horrible :puke:  So I sent it out to a processor that made organic dog food and had 230# of dog food made.  The dog would have rather starved to death than eat it.

Finally we added honey to it and used it for bear bait at the base of a huge salal bowl filled with berries.  The bears seemed to like it and we took three very tasty bear off of that bait site.

The best wild game I've ever eaten = October Huckleberry Bear

Worst wild game I've ever eaten = Skunk Cabbage Bear
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Bear that are feeding on berries, apples and pears with a few live salmon mixed in are good eating.  If they're feeding on dead, rotting salmon you got some smelly terible tasting bear meat......dog food maybe. :bdid:

I'm 100% sure my one and only bear last year and all the other bears I tried were eating nothing but berries when killed. In no way in any of the meat did I taste the slightest hint of berry. Bear meat has however become my second favorite wild game meat, it is delicious. Where are these  bears with meat that tastes like berries?

I've never tasted one that had berry flavor.  But the meat is definately sweeter when they have been eating berries.  I would assume that is what they meant.

On the other hand skunk cabbage bear might not taste like skunk cabbage but they sure do smell like it.  Must taste worse than a dogs butt, because my dog never seems to mind butt.  Though he will not eat skunk bear. :chuckle:
