Wondering if I screwed up
« on: August 19, 2008, 08:37:30 PM »
I bought a dozen arrows today with 6 new broadheads.  $174

I get home and thought I was getting the exact same thing I had been shooting.  They were one inch short.  I figured the guy screwed up.  I told him I wanted full shaft, 31 inches.  Well They were 31 inches.  I had been shooting 32.    I have 6 freshies and 5 shoot well with broadheads.  I only need one, but dang it.  I can't decided whether to go ahead and shoot them or sell them or what.

I'd sell them. It might take a while but somebody will buy them if you market them enough. Try one of those trad boards like tradgang.com

How much does it matter with traditional gear? Are they too short to shoot or do they fly different? Just curious.

I just assumed they were for his trad bow. I could be wrong. Yes it does matter. Especially if they're too short how can you get your draw back? If they're too long it's not a big deal to fix... From what I read it says they are one inch short.

They are goldtips , traditional grained carbons.   I suppose it wouldn't matter but I really didn't feel like changing my draw and apparantly have been drawing the full 32.   I imagine they would fly about the same, just didn't want to mess with my draw.  I'd shoot one to try it but then I wouldn't have a dozen unshot arrows.  They cost $115 for the dozen so don't want to waste them

Thats why I was asking, never messed with traditional gear. I didn't know how much longer on the arrows are cut past the rest. Same as compound?

Is the length of the arrow going to affect your draw length? If that's the case I would sell them.

Yes they are for my trad bow.  I guess I have time since I think I have enough for the season.  Ugh

You can obviously control your draw a bit, but I still anchor and I pull back full draw.  Interesting enough I went and got my first batch , the ones I dumped my moose with up in Alaska and they are 31 1/2.  That explains a few things.

I've shot arrows up to 2 inches too long and they usually just shoot lower or fall short of the target when compared to a normal length arrow for me. When I shoot arrows which are too short it feels somewhat awkward but definitely manageable. You can still get a kill but when you get into a shooting groove where everything is natural and instinctive it is a good thing to have all your arrows be as similar as possible. It's not like shooting 40 grain bullets at a deer or anything but it does affect the overall performance and experience to some degree.

Those arrows sound like they would fit my setup. Got any pics? Not sure I have any money left though.

This late in the game, I think I will hold off doing any drastic changes.  I guess if I run out of arrows this fall, we will re-think it.

Give the shop a call and ask (beg) if they will exchange them for you.  If you're a moderately good customer to them, then they'll most likely take care of your problem for no charge.  There's a darn good chance that they'll be able to sell them again at a shorter length to another customer, and they want to keep you happy.  Maybe it's time to build a simple arrow saw so that you can control every aspect of the build process.  I was amazed how often I used mine once I had it done, but I have my wife and 2 daughters shooting as well as doing all the work on my buddies' equipment.

Shoot Doug, you shuld talk to me more about such things! There are a number of places on the net to buy a dozen arrows, at least as good or better than those, for about $95-$100....
Anyhow..yeah, that sucks on the length. I still cant believe you draw that far. That dam bow is SMOKIN at that draw length!

Thanks. I wanted to say that too but I was being nice and decided not too. Besides I was not sure if that was completely true if he has carbon arrow shafts. I would not know the cost on those.

Not sure if this is your style, but you could maybe try putting a cricket clicker on your bow to maybe re-train your draw. Ive used clickers before, and they are great. I dunno. I shoot 31's and 30's pretty much the same.
