300. mag, too much?
« on: September 06, 2012, 02:44:04 PM »
I have a "know-it-all" buddy that hunts, more then I have in recent years, he keeps telling me a 300 win mag was the only gun worth hunting with.

So....of course........ I got one  :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

Now since I bought a 300 mag he says I am just going to ruin all my meat because its too powerful and will blow a huge hole and blah blah blah.

but.. he tends to be on the know it all side, but worse, the jealous side.. true, false?

For a rabbit, yes.
For an elephant, no.
Which one are you hunting again?

I have a couple .I love them and hunt deer, elk and bear with them. Definitely not too much gun. Besides, how much meat you ruin has more to do with bullet you select then caliber.

300 Mag will kill anything you can hunt here..  including moose....

IF you shoot a deer at like 15 yards.. yea, you might blow up a shoulder...   but you will do fine with it...
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

I shoot a .300 WM for both deer and elk.  I run 180gr Barnes bullets down the barrel.  Doesn't ruin much meat and the Barnes retains most of it mass.  Of course I'm not shooting them in the prime meat areas either.  On deer behind the shoulder or a neck shot work well.  For my bull Elk hunts I'll add a shoulder shot to the options.  I kind of like to break them down.  Even with that I lose very little meat.

I love my .300 Win mag.  I use factory 180 grain loads because I don't reload, and just be careful where you shoot them and you will be fine.

Just out of curiosity, what caliber does he hunt with?

Great gun, the only reason it would be too much would be you either don't like to carry the heavier gun or don't like the extra recoil.

Guys like that crack me up.  If he's so in love with the 300WM at first but bagging on it now.  What does he shoot?  'Cause I'm thinking it's not a 300WM...

I'll go ahead and guess what he's going to say about most calibers:

.243 - "Too small for deer, too big for coyotes."
.25-06 - "Can't buy ammo everywhere."
.270 - "Jack O'Connor was a closeted homosexual."
7mm RemMag - "Kicks too hard, eats barrels."
30-06 - "Boring, everybody has one."
300WM -  "Blows up too much meat."
338WM - "Too much gun for deer.  Makes my pu**y hurt to shoot it.  Owie."

You think he's jealous now, just wait until you drop a deer with your 300WM.  No matter what it is, it's gonna suck compared to the one you didn't shoot.

You have a great round.  I think it is one of the best out there.  What kind of rifle did you get it in?

"Only gun worth hunting with"  :chuckle:  :dunno:. You'll be fine, there isn't too much meat right behind the shoulder anyways.

Agreed! Your "buddy" must be jealous or something.

Heck no!! It's my number #1 choice and favorite cartridge. Ive shot a truck load of stuff with the .300 Winnie. With one of my heavy barrels,  I shot 186 Rockchucks in one spring/summer. Furthest I took a Mulie with that rifle was a doe at 608 yards. All with Nosler 180 BT's and IMR 4831.

My buddy always jokes about how he's going up to Vail opening morning to shoot a spike with milk still on it's lips in the face at 10 yards with his .300 Win Mag. This post made me think of that.  :chuckle:
