With the bullets I use my .25-06 causes quite a bit more damage then either of my .300 mags...

I hear stuff like that all the time. People see me with my 300 weatherby for blacktails and say its too big and blows them up, never had an issue. I did shoot my buck last year through the shoulder and it kinda messed up some meat, not bad though and I doubt a 270 or 30-06 would have been much different. I shot a couple doe antelope with it last year too, right behind the shoulder and didn't waste any meat, those things are probably about 80lbs on the hoof.

agree with this statement 100%, use 100gr ballistic tips in my girl's 25-35 WIN & my butcher friend asks what the heck she shoots cuz of the damage, pulled all of 'em & use something else 'cause of it.

I also owned a 300 Roy & handloaded it up & down with all kinds of bullets & used for everything from ground squirrels to buffalo (bison) & never felt overgunned 'til I broke my arm & ended up with a pin in my arm that limits my tolerance for recoil. stick with 180's for all & you'll be happy, lighter & they break up at mind creaky velocities (read close) unless you use premium hold together bullets.

Bloodshot! Cut it out as soon as possible to keep it from tainting the good meat.

It will be pretty obvious what is damaged and what is not.  Large, dark, bloody, torn-up patches of meat at the entry/exit site.  Pretty much if you look at it and don't think you would want to eat it, then, there ya go!

One thing I have found you can do is to trim away that part as soon as you can, especially if you plan to hang before or take your meat in for processing, trimming away the bloodshot area helps to keep it from spreading into the area around it.

300WM + 165 gr Speer SP +  54.0gr Varget = 2799fps (Hodgdon.com)
Remington factory 30-06 165gr core-lokt  = 2800 fps

I agree with Grundy53, the 300 WM is a GREAT caliber. I've hunted bear, elk, and deer with 180 Barnes and it has never let me down and NEVER been too much gun. Enjoy it!!

The answer to your original question: "he tends to be on the know it all side, but worse, the jealous side.. true, false? " is true.

The answer to your post title: "300 mag, too much?" is no.

:) My go to hunting rifle since 1972 has been a 300WM, custom built for me by my brother. Longest shots I ever made, only have shot 3 animals more than once, all my best mounts. yep the 300, I love the cartridge, and my rifle.

A Tikka would be the only thing that would detour me from the chambering.
