Bull down < pic up >
« on: September 08, 2012, 10:43:59 PM »
:IBCOOL: Got my first elk, a very nice 4x4 Roosevelt Friday morning and I just got back. I got to say thanks for the help from the two other camp hunter's, packing a elk out on a 95 degree day 4 miles in behind locked gates  is not fun, but things just worked out. I would of just butchered this elk up myself but with the heat and all I just took it straight to the butcher and it weighed in at 372lbs bone in.

Pics and story soon to follow up

By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Anyone one recommend a good taxidermist for mounting just the horns, I might like to do a European mount. Someone near me would be nice.

Congrats, Its not that hard to do yourself, skin, boil, pick, scrape, pressure wash, pick some more, whatever works to get the skull clean. Might have to glue a few teeth back in. I dont like the look of a bleached skull so thats where I quit.

I'm sure there are plenty of taxi's around that can do a nice Euro in that area.  When in Seattle I personally use Buzzy Cook at Olympic Taxidermy, North Bend.  He also has one of the more consistantly quick turn arounds.

Congratulations!!
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

So the story goes:

I got up late thinking that we were going sleep in but after having a long talk with my wife last evening and her being overwhelmed by the kids she wanted me home early. So I got up and my hunting partners wanted to sleep in so I headed out the door by myself.

I biked in about 3 1/2 miles and herd bugling and headed up a ridge and started cow calling and bugling back forth with three different bulls, but after realizing that they are not going down a valley and up a hill to get to me I figured that I need to go over to them. So I pedaled down a hill and up a big hill right to where I heard them. When I got in there I could smell them and heard him bugling 40 yards from me and started shaking with adrenaline, gave a cow call and estrus whine with my Phelps call and got no response. Thinking I got winded I headed up trying get a look down were I heard him bugle.Just then I heard him again about a 100 yards from where he was so I headed up some more and gave two soft cow calls, checking my wind all the time and I got nothing back. Thinking they took off again I started walking down hill to search just when I heard the bushes crack and he just popped out onto the road. I drew back with no time range and a nice broad side shot I let it fly thinking it looked like about 40 yards and whack right on the ground under his legs. I thought he was gone because he jump up thinking what was that but I took two more steps and there he was looking right at me, now with another arrow knocked I drew back knowing the distance to be more than 40 yards I put my pin on his back with him quartering away from me I shot him right in the chest. After that I walked up and saw a lot blood and heard a crash about 150 feet in. He ended going about 150 feet down as the crow fly’s but about 80 yards from where I shot him.

I got the code from a very nice guy who shall remain nameless and drove in. Then once we were in we hooked him up and threw him into the back. I got to say luck was on my side that day and it just worked out. :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: Now we didnt take advantage of that we just did our bussness and left, never to use that code again.
