2012 Mulie Buck with photos
« on: September 30, 2012, 08:17:45 PM »
Last week I dropped my largest buck so far with a bow.  Some may criticize my shot choice but i felt confident.  I missed 3 others earlier in the week including a buck that jumped the string and kicked the arrow.  A two point and this legal three point had busted us and were trotting in the opposite direction we were going.  I quickly nocked an arrow praying for them to stop (yeah right a buck stop. not)  I saw a window like area appear in front of me I swear a sign from God or at least one of his hunting angels.  "Ken shoot here!"  I waited and let it fly.  I wittnessed a thing of beauty.  Arrow and buck on collision course.  I heard a loud "thud"  and my heart sank.  To me "thud" is a tree not meat.  Everyone has heard what I call the "meat thwack"  when you put the hurtin on an animal with an arrow.  He crossed over the trail and the two point put it in high gear racing up this steep ridge.  My buck followed and suddenly stopped.  I thought to myself "He stopped?  Bucks don't stop."  he did a stutter step and put his head down and started walking back downhill.  I was Yeah baby he is hurting.  I am a bit embarrassed to admit but I was acting like a newby and should have let him bed down and die.  He walked into some low brush and I sent by buddy ahead to cut him off while i tracked the blood.  My buddy shouts "here he is"  I said is he down?  he says no he is just standing here.  I shout shoot him again.  he states i can't i don't have my range finder.  I yell at him "SHOOT!' I hear that lovely sound of meat thwack.  he then shouts "I am not sure I hit him"  I said "i heard it you got him"  he got another lung shot and the buck went down in another 40 yards.  Pretty awesome.  I got two nice fat backstraps and plan to have a european mount made with the rack.  Good to hear some good bow hunting stories.  Seen another post where a guy dropped one with a long bow. that is really cool.

Nice job indeed. I'm not gonna bust your butt for anything you mentioned. Sounds like you a made a lethal first shot and your buddy followed up resulting in a faster and more humane kill. Good on both of you. I hope you are going to get more than just the backstraps out of it.

Nice looking deer and well done with the bow.

I guess I will be the first to throw stones?  It sounds to me like it was a poor decision to shoot (perhaps the reason for the 3 prior misses?) and a poor decision on the tracking and yelling back and forth, but somehow worked out in the end.  Nothing like flinging arrows all season until you finally stick one good enough to kill it.

A partner putting the coup de grace on an animal is NOT party-hunting.
I'd just like to remind everybody that it's about the hunting, not just the killing. In other words, it's about the total experience, the sport itself and the challenge involved. Bowhunting, done right, is a justifiable and honorable pursuit. Done for the wrong reasons, simply chalking up kills and seeking personal glory, it's taking away rather than giving back to a principled way of life that has to be experienced to be understood. I'd look at your regs and RCW's real close. Nice buck and congrats but I'm agreeing on the party hunting.  :bdid:
