just to see what everyone thinks
« on: October 01, 2012, 10:13:34 PM »
this is hypothetical ONLY. 10 years ago in Montana if the government had introduced the smaller cousin to the Canadian gray wolf (the timber wolf) yes i know there the same animal. But the farther south you went years ago the smaller the wolves got. so do you think there would be the same problems that we are having? would the fight between the anti's and the hunters still be there? would the farmers and ranchers still be losing livestock? would people still be being stalked by wolves? yes i know if you feed an animal over time they become used to the food and to humans. i am just wondering what you would think if it was a 75 lbs wolf instead of a 150 lbs wolf. this is just for discussion and maybe so we can all learn something.

Pack predator.  They become very effective and smart as they learn from one another.  That smartness gets them into trouble as they will go for easy kills.  Fenced animals create a blood thurst.  I imagine they would have still been reduced as they competed for a food resourse.  If they were strickly a scavanger, they may not have been an issue.

I think the problem would still be there/here.  The main problem I see isn't necessarily the wolf itself, but the wolf fluffers and the endangered status and lawsuits.  They basically gave the wolves authority over humans, and I think even the smaller wolves would've picked up on that and learned to use it.

the timber wolves have been around for years small numbers but they were here, the bigger canadian wolves have eliminated the endangered timber wolves! You dont hear the tree huggers saying anything about that now do ya!!?? and as an invasive species they shouldnt be covered by the endangered species act because canadian wolves are not endangered there is ten's of thousands of them!!!

Weight would not matter.  Basically the size of many mammals is based on nutrition.  Generally speaking sometime the habitat will determine the size of the animal.  Take the small black tails on some of the san juans.  Bring some to the mainland and make sure they get good groceries and in a couple of generations they will be normal size.  Kind of hard to explain in a few sentences.   If you think about it a would farther north has less competition than to the south.  In the long term they will get smaller to the south.
