SO here is the story. This bull is a Peaches Ridge bull, I had ten points going into the drawing this year! So we started hunting on the 1st of October and boy was it heating up in the area we were in...we had four bulls workign and just couldn't decide which on to go after. At around 1030 Monday morning we were walking up a trail and my buddy says theres an Elk! It took me a minute to see it and when I saw it was a bull I jsut saw from the mid back to butt at about 70 yards. I passed the shot because I didnt want to chase elk the rest of the day, it was a poor shot. On the 2nd of October we had some action but not like Monday, the weather was still very warm yet and so we jsut hunted in the timber where it was cooler. Saw some Elk but nothing really to shoot. On 3 october it really cooled down and we chased a bull throung the dark timber and found some really great new spots to hunt. We never did catch up to that bull! That afternoon we went into town for showers....may I stank really bad! By now I am getting a bit frustrated that we are not seeing too many Elk but I am having a blast chasing them! So the 4th of October rolls around and we are up early but we go hunt close to camp and we bust a couple of cows and hear a bull bugeling so we start calling and try to get him into us but he hangs up and we cant get him to move so we decide to go down after him and we play cat and mouse for about an hour and then he just shuts up and that was that. We never did see that guy. So we go back to camp and graba a quick breakfast and head out again at around 1030. We walk about 1/2 mile back into the timber and we bust a cow or two at around 1130. Then my buddy spots a bull and I just could not see the damn thing even though it was 40 yards from us! Now I am so frustrated and pissed off I could about throw my glasses down and head home! I felt like screaming! So we continue to hunt up the hill and I bust a cow and she just stands there at 10 yards.....I trieds to put antlers on her but it did not work! So we head back to camp and plan our attack for the evening which was about an hour away by now. So the evening we go into an area that is a bit marshy in the begining and find a place to sit down and wait. After about an hour of sitting wiht no sound or movement i decide that we just need to drive to a different place so we go back to the truck and start to drive up to a different place to hunt. Just then out of the blue I look uphill and see an Elk....not only was this an Elk but a bull at that. I tell my hunting partener to stop and I think at any second the beast is going to bolt but he does'nt, he just stands there to my amazement. So my buddy sees that I am awestruck and says "get out and shoot the bull!" I get out and still expect it to run but it doesnt. I dont have a great shot so I move up the hill to get a better angle and the bull still stands there. SO I confirm antlers one last time, put my bead on him and squeeze the trigger. Now the wind is blowing from left to right and so I was able to actually watch the shot. After the shot I can hear the projectile strike him and down he goes. Not one step did he take after the shot! The shot was about 75 yards and hit him behind the shoulder taking his heart out but never exiting the body. We backed my buddys truck up tot he bank and after field dressing him we drug him downhill and into the back of the truck whole!
We put on lots of boot miles only for the hunt to end in the blink of an eye! I have never in my life seen a bull Elk standing just off a road nor have I every been able to take an elk out of the woods whole, usually it is a pack out of the woods on backs. So there you have it, my story and pictures!
