Well, the day started off kind of slow. We didn't make it to the mountains until 8:45. Saw a grouse right at the gate but no shotgun so she gotta pass. About 45 minutes I had a coyote at about 75 yards but decided to let him walk because I knew there was going to be a deer over the next ridge. As it turned out, there was no deer. We continued our venturing for another hour or so and decided to take a break on a little rock out cropping over looking a big canyon. We sat there for about 20 minutes and saw another coyote at about 300 yards running like his tail was on fire. I gave him a "whoof" and got him to stop for half a second. Didn't get the shot off though. We went on our way and finally managed to jump two does. We both have our second deer tags, so I tried to get her set up on them. They were in and out of the picture pretty quick so she didn't get the shot. We went on for another hour or so and decided to go grab some lunch. We were walking out down an old logging road and I spotted two deer. One bedded and one standing. I told her to shoot the one standing up. She hesitated for a moment but then took the shot. Forty yards broadside. Dropped like a rock. We were both under the impression that she had just filled her doe tag. Well, as luck would have it, she shot the worlds smallest spike. He sure was a cute little bugger. She was very excited and I was very proud of her. She did great and we both had an amazing day. To make it even better, she killed her first deer with the model 94 30-30 her grandpa passed down to her. He was very excited and proud to hear it.
