Does this exist with GPS using Hunting map programs?
« on: October 17, 2012, 05:40:00 PM »
OK, So I know that there are land ownership map programs for gps. Is there anything that specifically tells you it is legal to hunt coyotes in certain land areas? If so, what program does it? If not, what can you do to figure that out? I have cabelas recon hunt, and it is hard as heck to tell what color the actual area your in is. If you can figure it out, how do you tell if you can actually hunt coyotes there? It may say something like "Bureau of Reclamation land"  or " state land" or "National wildlife refuge & Management areas" and so on......... At this point I would buy a garmin gps and the huntinggpsmaps.com setup for it if it would help me out. We also had the same issue on Sunday out on the Nisqually Delta trying to figure out where we could legally duck hunt. Any help is appreciated, I really want to figure this out. I don't want to break any laws, but I want to take down some yotes this winter. I have the area in question below by the potholes resevoir for the coyote hunting. I think I was looking at the big game regs demo on my phone, and it showed areas where you could hunt per say "cougar", I beleive it told you what firearm you could use, and when it was legal, etc....... What can we figure out here?

It's easy: you can hunt coyotes everywhere, except where you can't.

That sounds flippant, but it's not.

If you can legally hunt in an area, you can legally hunt coyotes.

Areas you cannot hunt are usually pretty easy to figure out: national parks are a good example.

Some areas restrict the discharge of a firearm; some areas restrict centerfire rifles.

If the land is private and you do not have permission, you would be trespassing, not hunting illegally.

I'm not aware of a single "coyote free" zone where other species can be hunted, but coyotes cannot.

Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

Well, on this map I posted near the potholes, there is supposedly an area where coyotes are protected, but you can hunt other species. This area has a national wildlife refuge on it. I believe when I checked it before, it was legal to hunt deer and ducks on it at certain times of the year.  I read on the regs that it's not legal to hunt coyotes in that area. I am trying to clarify how to figure all this stuff out.

I've not heard of that. I doubt any mapping software would help in that case. You could contact the local WDFW regional office and ask if they're aware of any restrictions.

I think you're talking about the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge.

Google it and I'm sure you'll find all the info you need.

Thats the one. Looks like you can bird hunt. They only allow shotguns, muzzle loaders, and archery. It says right in the info that coyotes are protected there.
