Suggestions on any Public lands to hunt in GMU 142, or 381
« on: October 23, 2012, 12:54:53 PM »
Never hunted over there for Elk, and see its Any Elk.. is it all private farms, or are there some good spots to hunt in those GMUs.   I am down with a Cow ELK (that 400 pounds of meat in the freezer)  any ideas would be awesome!

or any farms that allow hunting just have to go talk to them and get permission?

I haven't hunted those units but I would say since it is any elk, there is going to be little to no elk in those units. Just like the unit I am from is any elk and there is rarely any elk seen in that unit.
There would have to be some public land around somewhere you would just have to find it. For your information, it is a little late to be door knocking on those units. Most people don't like people asking to hunt a week or less before the season.

Don't bother.  I am very familiar with 142, and there are a few elk scattered around but almost all on private land.  Even with permission on a lot of private land you would have to be damn lucky to get one.  There isn't a concentration of elk anywhere (although I know a few properties that consistently have elk at certain times of the year).

Sorry in advance for being negative.  I have hunted deer in 142 for 26 years, on multiple farms, and have seen one or more elk maybe 6 times.  I know they exist, but as said before, they are usually scattered.  Odds are very low for success in most areas.  The farms that have elk more regularly also probably have many friends/family coming over for a visit during hunting season.  Good luck, but don't hold your breath for a good place to hunt.
