What is the live weight of a mature blacktail?
« on: October 25, 2012, 04:18:37 PM »
Curious on what people think? I have weighed almost a dozen that were gutted. Just weighed last nights deer whole....these are tiny deer...much smaller than mulies and whities right?

Depends on where the BTs are at.  I've seen some that are probably close to 250--275 lbs live.  They tend to live in the high country.  The ones that live in towns may only be around 150 lbs live.
Seen WTs between 90 and 220 lbs.  Couldn't tell you enough about mulies.

The one I shot last year, and another my brother shot a few years back were both well over 200lbs. They were both in the foothills at about 800ft.

They vary in size just like whitetails. Just because your deer are small it doesn't mean they all are. The three biggest blacktails I've weighed were between 215 and 230lbs gutted.

That's like asking what is the average weight of a human.  Deer like all cervids very from genetic make up to how much beer they drink. :chuckle: really though they can very a lot.

I got 70 lbs of boned out meat off the one I just got, and I kept the tenderloins and back straps. It would have gone over 200 live.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I'm not!

I got 65lbs of processed meat without the front left quarter and neck that was destroyed when I shot it. I'd guess 200lbs live weight.

Depends on where the deer r.  We've killed a few over 200lbs the largest was 275lbs before fielddressing it.  Two of them were big 2 pts.  One 2 pt we weighed after field dressing it at 175 lbs, add the guts and it is over 200.  There r some big ones.

Geez. My bucks probably average closer to 150 live weight. And to me those have been bigger bodied bucks. We got one that was probably a solid 180 and he was a toad. Still got MAYBE 60lbs of meat off him, which is a lot to me for a blacktail.

Our island BTs have ranged from 30 to 54 pounds of meat, every scrap I could possibly get off, except maybe some of the thin rib meat.

Haven't weighed a whole one but know that I can lift a 160 pound person off their feet and have had a hard time lifting a few on the rope to hang them, but I could.

Funny, I've killed 50+ deer, WT's, MD, and BT's and the biggest bodied deer was a 2 pt blacktail. I got him around the 5500' level. I didn't get to weigh him but he had to be pushing 300 lbs. Big ol' nasty buck. Toughest deer I ever ate.
