Definitely do your math on where it's legal to drive a snow cat. I have a friend in Darrington that has a snow cat and a few years ago he got busted by the forest service for innocently driving on deep ungroomed, forest service roads. He got a warning from the forest service and they said if they bust him a second time it's a $5000 ticket. That's the Mt.Baker/Snoqualmie area. I know, it's a bunch of crap, a guy should be able to drive a snow cat around like a pick-up when a pick-up can't get there anymore, but that's the dictator world we live in. Anyway, we were wanting a snow cat as well for our place on the eastside. Fortunately we're surrounded by thousands of acres of private forest land and have permission to drive in there.
yea I have been reading on there last night on irongoats posts , that group of people ride on forest service land , there is more to it.than most of.us know

Irongoat at forumsforums is an expert on this, and claims that USFS use permits are availble ( for a fee)

My buddy just finished a restoration on one. It has ford econoline van motor and 4 speed. The rear end (steering) is out of a cat. The steering hydraulics are simply two ford econoline master cylinders. Rebuilding the tracks was a big expense. Tires wheel bearings etc all added up. Add new halogens and 100% led lighting it's a sweet rig. Weights more than a truck. I hauled it home when he bought it. It gave the truck a workout going over Blewett.

My friend had most of his work done in Bend Oregon. He's considering selling it due to changes in the plan with his family and cabin plan in Easton..

Before restoration- He's considering including it in the sale of his lot in Easton. Has water and septic installed. Everything was permitted with Kittitas Co. It's in the little community past the dam. Ready for a cabin build. Has 7 30" x 30' glue-lams to include as well.

Looked at that machine.  It was parked at the east end of Roslyn last winter.  The old guy next door was impressed

It should still be parked in Roslyn. Last street to the West actually unless he was out driving around town with it?  :chuckle: That's my buddy Mike. Drove it downtown a while back. Passed a WSP and Sheriff. They both just looked. He's not sure how to register the machine. It was bought without a title from a guy who bought it from a guy type of deal.

Not sure what type of registration is needed? ORV? Vehicle? ??? I told him to leave the KCFD tags on it:) That was another good question he's wondered about. With lack of records on the machine, which KCFD is it? King, Kittitas or how many other "K" counties.

Eitherway, it's a solid beast that's now been completely gone through. All it lacks is fresh paint but, Mike has become fond of the patina of the old skins. Inside has been Line-ex'd and both heaters rebuilt and working.(yes, two) Has escape hatches on the bottom, top and sides. If you roll it or, get turned over in an avalanche you can pop the super spiffy escape hatch which opens out the bottom between the tracks.
