Crow?
« on: September 25, 2008, 12:07:11 PM »
Crow season is coming up soon and I plan to shoot some if I see em in my yard, but what do I do with them after? I have no idea of what to do with a bird. I just skin everything else and cure it. I dont think crow would be tasty and its probably not worth the money to have it stuffed. Can you skin them or do anything else with a bird without paying?
I'd rather hunt with Dick Cheney, than ride with Ted Kennedy.

Cook it real slow in a crockpot with onions and garlic.  Put in some taters and carrots.  Its crow stew and it is real good.  Pretty much grew up on it.

LOL WOW....I didnt think anyone would give a crow recipe or say they are good lol. I must say I am surprised.  I guess now I'll have to taste it. But it doesnt sound very good since they eat garbage and dead animals. Do I have to worry about getting sick because they eat nasty road kill?

There are methods of de-breasting a small bird without even gutting them.  Peel the skin back, give em a rinse and trim the breasts.  Somethng like that.  CrowBusters has tips on that too I think.  Its crow/varmint guts and sh!t that worries me most.  Stay clear of the guts and enjoy the exotic flavors only a garbage eater can offer. :cue:  Or just blast em hard and there'snot much to clean up anyway. ;)

haha...I have had Hali I think. Not much of a fish person. I love crab cakes.....Anyways, im gonna use some .22 shotshells I bought awhile ago. They have a decent spread up close. I shot a pizza box in a garbage can and one of the small balls riccochet off the hard plastic and nipped my ear, hurt in a good way lol. Im gonna wear glasses when I shoot hard things with those from now on. :D

I wouldn't use 22lr shotshells.

They spread like crazy from a rifled barrel. There is NOT shot column...just tiny, jumbled up cloud of deformed #12 shot. They won't even penetrate a pop can from more that ~10yds...not enough for crow, I wouldn't think.

CCI CB Longs work well, and are quiet.
I used to take a few on the farm from time to time, as they'd annoy the heck out of us, eat some feed, and crap on everything.

Of course, a 17gr Vmax from an HMR at just over 2,600fps does a great job if you don't want to worry about retrieving the carcass.  :chuckle:

Oh, good point. Well, alls I have in the way of crow would be my .22 or my shotgun, but its too loud for shooting on my property. I live on mountain highway (HWY 7) and have neighbors on one side of me. :-( I might just have to get a bb gun then lol. Or just sight in my .22. :-\

but its too loud for shooting on my property.

CCI CB Longs, as mentioned above.
29gr RN at 710fps. Accurate and powerful enough for crow to ~40yds, and your neighbors won't even know a shot went off. They are quieter than my pellet rifle (springer).

Remington also just released the CBEE again...a ~750fps hollow point. Also very quiet from a 22lr rifle.

They run about $7.00 per 100...but work very well for taking out small critters in semi-populated areas.
