savage 110fcp 338 lapua
« on: February 24, 2013, 06:02:53 PM »
I have been working on the reloads for this gun now off and on for a few months and finally found the one. I am not sure on the velocity yet but will this weekend. I am just happy with the accuracy. This is 3 shots with 300 gr berger.

It doesn't get much better than that! What powder are you using? Was that group shot at 100 yards?

Wow, you ought to be able to do in just about anything with that load at a long ways off.

Very impressive group.

Yeah it was at 100 yards and Retumbo is what I used. Its taken a fair amount of loads to get here. I had a previous load that ran 2733fps average but wouldn't group tight enough.

My goal is a coyote at 1,000 yards.
Last weekend we practiced on some small flour bags at 1100. I had a hit but took quite a few to do it. This should help with quicker results with more practice.

my current reloads with my trg 42 are decent, but would like to tighten them up. currently running about 2780fps. did you have to slow them down to improve accuracy? i'm basically maxed out for COL...beautiful group btw. now go do a 3-5 shot group at 500yds!

I'd say a 300 grain Berger VLD is "Sufficient" for coyotes...... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

A lot of the bigger 338's love to shoot the heavy bullets very accurately at around 2800fps.

This weekend!
Yeah when I push for velocity my group opens. Also I am going against what I have usually done and seated the bullet deeper. Like a 0.50 jump

Nkce group, lloks like you found what your weapon likes  :IBCOOL:

Congrats on that & best of luck with those long shots. I don't suppose there will be much left if you're using Berger 300grainers  :yike:

Now that I have an accurate load to play with I will be trying to get 2750 and maintain this grouping.
This load should be about 2650 from others I know with similar models.

I found a really good load with my 340wby that was sitting right at 2700. I dropped to a little lighter bullet for awhile but I am going to go back to a heavy bullet again. It will give me a better BC as well. The 225 is about perfect for the 340wby on the long range shooting. I am running the 200's right now.

You would be surprised how little damage they do. What Dartman76 videos on youtube. I think it is due to lack of mass? Also I am using the 300 hunter version which; is supposed to have a thinner jacket for more expansion vs OTM. Who knows either way he won't run away. Lol

My experience with the VLD hunting Bergers is that they zip right through coyotes if they are broadside. Length wise is a whole other story. They need a deeper target than a broadside coyote to open.
