Calico Buck

I take no credit for this...somebody sent this email to me a couple years ago, I figured I would throw it out there. Anybody seen this floating around the Internet? This is what the email reads:



(Here is a calico buck that a hunter shot over in WI. He sent these pictures to a bunch of people to see what he could get and the owner of Cabela's paid him $13,000 for the head and hide. A calico buck like this one is rarer then an albino.)

I have seen that pic before and it sure is a cool deer. One of our local teachers shot a appy years back and it was a nive 4x4 benchleg.

Not sure about being more rare than an albino.  As I have seen quite a few piebald's in Washington and have yet to see an albino.  Sure is one cool deer though.  Cabela's probably got a good deal at 13 for it.  Don't imagine there are many of that quality running around.  I'm sure they spent more than that on their elephants and those are much easier to come by.

  I have seen 2 piebald does in the yakima river canyon but have never seen an albino. I highly doubt they are more rare. I could be wrong though. Pretty awesome deer to say the least. It would be tough for me to part with that unique of an animal.

I saw a pair of twins (blacktail) near my home 18 years ago. Each was different one white with a few brown spots and smaller more goatlike. The other was mostly brown with big white patches half way up the belly and normal size.  They were first year fawns but never saw them again.  I've also seen a doe while riding horse and she had spots on her hind quarters like an appaloosa.  Apparently a hunter shot one of her buck fawns, a 2 point with the same markings in 2010.  That was the year I saw the doe.

It's not the fact that it is a Piebald that makes it rarer than an albino.  It's that it is a Piebald with a very nice rack.  Piebalds typically never get a rack that nice.

I'd have to say it is more common than an albino with a rack that nice    I've seen pictures of albino elk with nice racks, but never a deer.  Though I do see pictures of nice piebald whitetail bucks every couple of years. 

Nice piebald blacktail bucks are quite common in rural King and Snohomish Counties.  When I lived in Issaquah there was a pair of 120-130 piebald blacktails that would feed in the neighbors rose garden.  I called them trophy bucks one day and she told me, "Oh no you're wrong!  Their my pets and part of the family."  That might have changed if she knew they were worth 13 grand a piece

Too many stores and not enough elephants I guess.  A friend booked an elephant hunt through Cabela's.  They made the offer for his cape before he even sent in his deposit (way more than 13 in hunt credits).  After the guy ahead of him had a bad hunt Cabela's called and advised him to cancel the hunt as the outfit was no longer reliable.  That's some dang good faith on Cabela's part

I came real close to having the caribou in my avatar full mounted for donation to Cabela's.  Even with a shoulder mount he's almost too big for our place.  Even with vaulted ceilings it's tight.  Decided I would make room in the house come hell or high water.  I want him looking at me each morning But if Cabela's had been closer

There is a protected herd living on an old military installation, with day and night patrols.  Not sure of the location, but a huge emphasis on allowing them to grow has been placed on the herd and that is nice to see.  Very unique genetics, wouldnt take much to wipe them out.

I see piebald does here in Goldendale from time to time.  See my post above.  There is a doe running around here in the north end of town that has at least 3 white socks.  Looks kinda cool.  I never have my camera along when I see her though.  I know, I know.  It doesn't exist without a picture, and thats okay.

I think that theory has been discredited some time ago.  It is widely believed now that it is a gene mutation similar to that which causes melanistic traits in pheasant that occurs naturally.  If you breed two melanistic pheasant you will get melanistic pheasant.  But breeding standard pheasant will result in melanistic traits by law of nature not inbreeding.  Same seems to be holding true in the research of piebald deer.

BTW - That deer in the OP was not taken in WI.  It was taken in Texas.

I've never seen one, but I'd bet they exist seeing as how wide spread the blacktails are.

Seen more muledeer with horns and female genitalia than any other deer species.  That's always a surprise to find.

Yes there are piebald muley I one (a doe) in the Swakane in 2007.

Back in the 90's there was an albino hanging our in the fall city area. I saw him a few times.

I don't know about muley piebalds but there are definetly benchleg piebalds.  My grandpa lived up Chinook pass most of my childhood and every winter would feed a pile of deer and for about 3 years a piebald doe would winter there (mud lake area).  She would also have fawns that were pielbald.

I saw a Piebald doe in Pennsylvania, have not seen one in WA. That is a very unique trophy in the pic. Nice buck!

Used to see a couple of Piebald bucks and does running around the Monroe area back in the 90's
