In Trophy Tactics II, there is one segment on tree stand placement/hunting and one chapter on still hunting. I don't recall reading anything about other methods, whereas Haugen's book discusses ground blinds, party drives and everything in between. While Iverson's book primarily focuses on two hunting strategies, the review you mention misrepresents the spirit, focus and totality of this book. Trophy Tactics II explores scouting, hunting strategies, maps and internet study, controlling human odors, the importance of wind direction for both hunting strategies and analyzing deer behavior, ballistics, ethics, and even includes an explanation of scoring trophy racks. Iverson relates that he is a still hunter at heart, but subsequent to his focus on trophy bucks, he has employed tree stands almost exclusively.  Haugen's book is worth reading, but Iverson's book is PACKED with information. I'll read a paragraph, then go back and read it twice again, reflecting on the area I'm currently scouting.

Im only half done with Iversons first book and IMO its already better then Haugen's. It literally is packed with information. For some reason I get so hung up on the never ending detail of Scots classification of blacktail bucks. Whether they be High Country Bucks, Cascade Bucks, Lowland Bucks, Coastal Bucks, etc.... Im sorry but to me, a blacktail is a blacktail! While reading it, I found myself saying "Shut up already and get on with it!" whereas Boyds book is pretty cut and dry. No BS at least not yet!

Sorry to necro a dead thread, but been hearing a lot about this book and there havent been any available on amazon or any major book seller. Anyone have this book and willing to part with it? Happy to pay shipping and a decent price(its almost $60 on Amazon)

Have you checked Sportco in Fife?  They used to always have copies of it on their bookshelf.

I've got to throw this one out there.  This is a better book for beginner Blacktail hunters who may not have the desire to kill the biggest deer in the woods, but would be happy to just have a chance to see and get a shot on a buck.  This is by far a more scientific based book than Haugen.  It has really everything you need to know to get out in the woods and get hunting, and has a better discussion of finding genetically gifted deer than either of the other two books.  He discusses seasonal browse sources, still hunting, hunting cuts, and other situations such as field dressing and transporting deer out of the woods. 
    It was written by L. Terkla, whom was the Dean of the OHSU/Dental School in Portland during  the early '80s while I was there.  I only met him once in four years and had not clue that he was a Blacktail Hunter, nor that wrote a deer hunting book - until I started hunting ten years ago.  Small world.  I got my used copy for $1.00 nine years ago.  Now some A.H. is trying to sell one on Amazon for $84!

I got an autographed copy from an old neighbor of his off eBay for way less then $50. Keep your eyes peeled and one will turn up for a reasonable price. Great book for taking trophies or just becoming a better deer hunter.

I wouldn't mind reading Trophy Tactics 1.  I've killed dozens but still need to know more!!!  It is surprising what you can learn from books.   I learned elk calling techniques from some books which paid off.

It's a great book, the best I've read on overall blacktail habits and how to understand them.  Pay attention to what he says about the wind, I have found it to be especially true on bucks that are more mature, but not necessarily true on younger bucks and does.  Another point I might make is I have not found that bucks truly have one 'core area', they actually wander around and move more than most people think, consistently inconsistent. Terrain, hunting pressure and predators all impact the size of a buck's home range.

So I have the first edition of this Blacktail Trophy Tactics book and was thinking recently... Is it legal to produce an Audio book version of this???

With this book being relatively rare and obscure it could benefit the hunting community to produce it as an audio book for consumption by future generations, at least with this being out of print like it has been... It's been interesting to observe the price fluctuations. A month ago I bought a copy of the first edition for a friend who just got his hunting license for the first time as a gift, and it only cost me $9 on thrift books. Seems that the price really spikes during the modern firearm season.

I have done some voice over work before and might just do this on my own volition in my home studio... Probably should contact a copywrite lawyer before considering any kind of publishing though. Thoughts?

Yeah, I think consulting a lawyer might be smart.  I can't remember if the book is out of print, but either way, the heirs of the estate of B. Iverson likely have legal rights to the content.  I'm surprised that the book isn't more available.  Quite obviously, there is still a market for it.
