I hunt elk with my 45-70 from time to time. I use it for brushy situation where I know I am not going to get a long shot. Now I just need to shoot an elk with it.
I have no concern for whether it is a sufficient cartridge at the ranges I would be hunting.

It's one of the most popular black powder cartridges ever. Outlived the modern versions like the 444 Marlin, and still going strong! Deer, Bear, Elk, Buffalo--I wouldn't be afraid to take any of them with it!

If you buy / use the right gun it is a 300 yard gun all day long. Don't buy the guide model if you want extended range capability.
