sound fishes

My dad and i just bought a boat for fishing in the sound. We will spend most time in areas 11, 12, 13. Besides salmon, what other types of fish are in the sound to catch(for food). And if you would like, tell me how you catch them. Thanks

My favorite....lingcod. My go to is a couple oz lead head jig with a white Berkley Power Grub...the six inchers.

honestly, there really isn't a whole lot else to fish for in those areas, that's still open any more.  there's sort of a token lingcod season but i've never caught one in the south sound.

i'd learn the salmon fisheries, they're out there, but i've never had the patience for downrigger fishing.

MA12 can be good in late July/August. The fish stage before going into Hoodsport and the Skokomish. Lilliwaup, Ayock Point, and Bald Point can all be pretty good. Coyote spoons behind a hot spot are usually pretty productive. My favorite used to be to stay in about 50' of water, and fish at 37' on the rigger. I haven't fished it in a couple years though.

Flounder and sole, oh and dogfish.  Don't laugh, if bled out and chilled, dogfish are decent eating and beat storebought fish sticks.  Lead head jigs will work on the flounder as will bait and I've caught dogfish on jigs and spoons but bait works best for them.

I've caught lots of dogfish off Nisqually and saw some guys with Starry Flouder there as well.

Lingcod, thats some thing I have always wanted to catch. Is there any thing special to look for when in a area with lingcod. Depth,current,etc.

It is harder to fish them, but I have often had better luck with the current moving pretty good.  Especially when the current is moving into the uphill side of the rocks or slightly parallel.  If fishing South Sound for Lings, I would head towards the Narrows.
