12 gauge bear ammo question
« on: July 30, 2013, 04:51:44 PM »
I'm gunna be hunting bear for the first time this year, but I'm not going to be able to use my rifle so I'm down to my shotgun. Its a single shot break action and was wondering if slugs are best or if anybody prefers something different like the Winchester PDX1 - they have a 1 oz. slug behind 3 00 buck shot.

A slug will do the job depending on where you hit the bear and how close you are.  Buck shot would probably also work if under 30 yards.  A slug will at least get you out to 100 yards.  150 yards if rifled with optics.
Cut em!

I would not hunt with a slug backed by buckshot. I am sure it would work but not necessary. Choose one or the other. A rifled slug would be good to 100 yards. Go take a few practice shots to find the point of impact. You will have a 6" or so drop at 100 yards.
I hunt therefore I am.

If you use the buckshot, I would say 30 yards max, and closer is preferred. And put more than one buckshot round into it. Just try to use the slugs if you can :chuckle:
