Help!! i may have made a bad purchse
« on: August 02, 2013, 09:20:32 AM »
My cousin talked me into bow hunting this year so iv been looking to purchase a bow. I found a guy who would sell one to me and since i don't know ish about bows (expect my draw length) i handed him the money. When i got home to play with it i noticed the sights, arrow rest, and the string don't aline up. The string is off to the side at least 1/2 inch, maybe a little more. Is that normal???? if not, what do i do?

For better clarification, the sight and the arrow rest are allined, but the string looks like its off, if you were to draw a straight line from the sights to the rest, the bow string would be to the left of the that line, i asked my cousin to take a pic of his his sight, rest, bow string, and they look to be all alined with each other

First thing I would do is junk that rest, take it to a shop have them put a new rest on and tune it up. You'll be good from there.  :twocents:

the string is off to the side of what? the cables? if it was lined up with the cables you couldn't knock and arrow. I'm confused by your question. Based on the pic it looks like the bow just needs to be shot and sighted in. However, if you haven't shot it and it is a used bow I would take it to a pro shop and have it gone through to make sure all is well.

If your string sight and rest dont line up its way out of tune. With a welk tuned bow you can see the string run down the center of the riser, rest and sights.  What bow is it

Way more info is needed, as to kind of bow, etc. Go to a pro shop and get some help. Loose the rest and  go with a whisker brisket or fall away...ditch the sight unless your hunt from a tree stand and get your draw adjusted to you. You may not have a bad deal....you just need some professional help. Don't get discouraged...get it set up right and you will have a blast.

For most bows if you line up the rest and string the pins will end up to the left of the string. How much depends mostly on riser torque. This is caused by the sideways load the cables put on your riser causing it to twist. Has nothing to do with the tune. At rest pins are left for right handed shooter, as you draw the riser twists clockwise slightly, now at full draw everything will line up. Hoyts tend to have quite a bit torque because of the fixed roller guard, puts a lot of pressure on the riser causing it to twist. Any bow with a flexible guard tends to have the least amount of twist(besides a shoot though system with no guard or slide at all), lining up your arrow rest and pins better. Cable slides end up somewhere in the middle. Grip torque can effect the alignment as well, but its mostly riser torque that you have no control over causing the misalignment. So in short, yes it's normal, unless its a huge amount.

It's getting busy, but you can bring it in to the Federal Way Sportsman's Warehouse, and I will take a look at it for you.  No charge.

This is a simple fix.  You don't need any new gear keep what you got.  Simply loosen the horizontal adjustment on the sight and the rest and line it up with the string.  Sight it in.  Go to your local archery shop, and ask them to help you paper tune it.  Work with what you got till you become comfortable enough to dump a bunch of money in to your new project.

I'm not here to thread jack but I have to give a shout out to Old dog and his crew (nice work). Old dog set my boy up with a great bow and made some mods on mine this week. He's extremly knowledgable, curtious and patient. :twocents:

Old dog, we'll see you soon... My boy slung 100 plus arrows today and I think I'm ready for a drop away.
