Near Cyspis
« on: August 09, 2013, 09:15:36 PM »
I am planning on taking my son down near Blue lake and Castle Butte next weekend to try and get him on a Bear for his first year hunting. Anyone have any idea where or if this is a good area to go?

Never heard of Cyspis or Castle Butte.  They aren't on my atlas, and there are 6 Blue Lakes in Washington State.  Maybe if you were more specific?  :dunno:

You find food and seclusion and just about anywhere form the Canadian boarder to the Columbia river is going to be good.  Literally bear everywhere you find food sources in the Cascades.  My latest reports were a bit doom and gloom as far as berry production up high.  So you might have to hit quite a few spots to find any good concentration of bear and berries this year.  Look for pigeons and poop!  You find them both in the same spot with few pickers and traffic you should be having a good day.

Also, in years with poor berry production I try to work the calls a few times per day.  If bear think they can get a meal easier by stealing it than foraging for it you should get a good response.  When the brush is just a little too high for a good shot calling can often get them to stand up or get up on a stump to take a look.  We've killed a good number of bear over the years that we could see but weren't able to get shots at until they stood up on a log to take a look at who was killing that fawn.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Great advice right there

The Cispus River near Randle, in Lewis County, is in my old Fishing and Hunting Guide book, and says it's good for deer, elk, and grouse hunting, but no mention of bear.  There are probably some there, but there are places where bears are plentiful.  The book says there are guide services in that area, so you might call some of them and see if there is any good bear places there.  My book is quite old, so the area might have changed since it was published.  Sorry to be of such little help...
