Thinking of trying something new, Lick Creek.
« on: September 23, 2013, 10:22:17 PM »
Kinda last minute but I'm thinking of heading to the far SE corner of the state for some deer hunting this weekend. I really need a weekend away from the house (and it's occupants maybe) so instead of hunt around home I thought I'd check out an area I've never been before. Any pointers or definite don't do's?  I've kinda picked the lick crk unit as my destination. I will get on the computer when I get home from work and do more research just thought I'd throw it up here for a bit since I'm at work.

Thick, steep country with low deer density in the national forest.

More deer on private land I bet?  Mule deer, not open for WT for me anyway.

 :yeah:

Especially if you are limiting it to mule deer.  I see mostly whitetail in Lick Creek while elk hunting, but that is usually up higher in the timber.  There may be more mule deer in the north part of the unit along the breaks of Lick Creek/Charley Creek/Asotin Creek

With the weather being around 50 at night and 70 during the day, what's the snake situation going to look like?

I've seen lots of nice bucks in there over the years. Modern rifle it can be a zoo around there.

It gets over-run with hunters. Used to be pretty good but the amount of hunters has affected it drastically.

I've heard that about modern season but not so much muzzle. Is it still true for muzzle?

I'll be down there this weekend chasing deer with my smoke pole as well.  Although I will be focusing on the Mt. View unit since I drew one of the special tags in there.  If you make it down to the southern part of the unit and see a white F-150 with a camper on it and a WSU Cougar flag flying stop in and say hi.   :hello:  If you are hunting in the lower elevations along the creeks and chasing muleys snakes could be a possibility, but if you are up higher in the timber I wouldn't be concerned with snakes at all.

The farmers can be brutal if you're on their property. Late 80's I was fishing the Snake river and a farmer shot a tresspassing Pheasant hunter in the chest....... The Sheriff was like "Orville, how many times I gotta tell ya to fire a warring shot first"? Weird ...... And they wouldn't let my partner in any of the stores. They threw him out of the Bar in Central Ferry, a grocery store in ..... Star? or some small town. They were like "You can come in but your buddy stays in the truck........They told me where to get Geese, chukars and pheasants, my buddy would open the truck door and they'd all fall silent.......
The first bird may get the worm, but it's the second rat that gets the cheese.
