.243 Win bullet question

I'm looking to do some predator hunting this winter, mainly coyote.  Was looking for a good bullet option in .24 cal that won't completely destroy the pelt.  Anyone use a .243 for yotes and which bullet would you recommend?  Thanks

I shot coyotes for years with the 243. It was always a mixed bag but if your saving the pelt use a well constructed heavier bullet and slow it down from factory loads.

Not sure on the twist rate, its my dad's old Ruger M77 bull barrel .243.  He assures me it's a tack driver.  After a long fire season I figured I could take a break every now and then from duck hunting by chasing some yotes around.  Not sure if they make them but would a .24 cal FMJ pill work well?

Federal premium offers a 85 grain tsx loaded .probably one of the best factory choices if you don't wanna reload .

I shot a yote a few years ago with my ruger model 77 head shot with Winchester supremes 55 grain super accurate bullet.  It did the job.

The bullet is only part of the equation to not ruining a pelt. The biggest is shot placement. Shooting a coyote with a frontal chest shot very rarely leaves anything other than a small.  hole. Any broadside shot that hits bone is asking for a big hole. Usually you can wait a coyote out to get the best shot placement. Granted you can shoot a bigger heavier bullet and get a slightly less chance of a big hole but only if the shot placement is right on the money and you lose a tremendous advantage of bullet speed which translates into less lead on a runner and less holdover on longer distances. If you want to snipe them at over 600 yrds then a heavier bullet would make sense.

I use 55gr to 70gr out of my .243 WSSM at speeds from 3760 to 4100 fps, a 65 gr out of my .243
a 50 or 52 gr out of a .24 is a good choice. The 52 gr speer with the large HP is a good one for a .223 out to 200 yrds or so. Hope this helps.

I have the same rifle.....very accurate. I've hit coyotes with the 55 bal tip and it leave a large exit. If you got a frontal shot it would liquify his insides. A solid fmj would do less damage. Go out, try em' all and see what works for you. Sounds like fun!

Nope little hole in no exit that load shots 1/4moa our of my 243 so I have yet to hit a bone other then the ribs. The 95gr bt at 2900 is flat nasty on fur it will leave a big exit wound

I'm thinking that a heavier, more solidly constructed bullet would be what you need. FMJ would be best.

i shot 3 younger coyotes out of the pasture at my house with my 243 and was using 55 grain varmegedon bullets and they never exited. i was shooting 100 to 200 yards and then i shot a adult coyote with my deer loads yesterday 100 grain nosler partion and the exit hole was on the large side but i also hit it in the shoulders.that was 80 yards
