Montana Deer Help
« on: November 09, 2013, 08:36:34 PM »
I was suppose to hunt deer with my buddy on his place in District 410 but he decided to back out on me which now leaves me with a deer tag and no place to hunt.  I have zero experience with Montana Deer hunting just wanna head over to try and fill this tag.  Any unit info would be grateful.  Is some western units better?  Is there alot of access?

With a buddy like that who needs an ex wife?, if your tag was a 600 I could have you a hookup, provided you didn't have a problem with shooting them from the truck. My buddy lives over there and doesn't get out of the truck nor does he shoot anything that you can't drive the truck directly to in order to load up.He doesn't care about antlers whatsoever.

Are you wanting to hunt mule deer or whitetails? Camper, trailer, tent?

I second the BMAs suggestion, there's a ton on the eastside. I hunting 406 for deer this fall (B tag) and was almost exclusively on BMAs and easily got my deer the second day. Back a shot gun and have your rifle on a sling if you want to Rambo it and go for birds and deer (that's how I roll).

Any of the National Forest in Region 4 will have decent deer hunting.  Or, you can go hunt the BLM land on the Lower Missouri below Fort Benton.  Or, you can hunt Block Management Areas.

Pay attention, as some of the hunt districts are not open the entire five week season.  Also, many of the western districts are permit only right now.

Are you trophy hunting, or just trying to find a deer?

I would be happy to fill the tag.  I love to hike but most importantly I want to use my bow.  I just put in for a week off of work so hope I get that.  Is the deer tag just a general statewide tag like here?  By the way guys thanks for all your responses.  I would shot a muley or whitetail small or big.

For the most part, it's a statewide tag.  Some of the hunt districts are by permit only.

The general firearm season has been open for two weeks now, so a bowhunt will be a little more difficult.  Still doable, but you'll be competing against 30-06's.

Edit:  There are some firearms restricted hunt areas, you may want to peruse the regs and find these and focus your efforts there.  There is one in Ravalli County that might be a really good option for you.
