Butchering kit
« on: November 12, 2013, 03:14:21 PM »
Who has the outdoor edge butchering kit?  How does it preform?  I want to get me a great set of knives for next year.  After doing 4 deer and and elk this year, I think I need some better quality knives.  Any recommendations?

Go buy a butcher knife.  It sounds sarcastic, but in all honesty you are better of buying a butcher knife designed for a butcher (not an outdoorsman).  The steel is better and you will be happy in the long run.  The cost is likely better also.

Outdoor edge kit works fine. I do 10-20 animals a year with mine. I have 2 sets.

:yeah: for boning and processing meat I like Victorinox.

Me too.  A butcher friend gave me one and now I wouldn't go back to using normal knives.

Forschner makes some fine butcher/boning knives.

Ive had the kit for 3 years and have butchered 10+ deer with it.

Knives are adequate, can get through 2 deer before sharpening is required to be as sharp as I like. 10 minutes with the lansky and back in action.

I would like another butcher knife though as there are usually a couple of us butchering together.

The outdoor edge is a great set. I also have a couple butcher knives (i think they are dexter) I bought at dicks restaurant supply that I really like. The biggest difference maker for me was getting a hook and learning to use it.  :twocents:
