After shooting the gun grouse
« on: December 12, 2013, 10:01:04 PM »
After hitting the range took a walk in a new area and saw a bobcat just before getting where we wanted. Stayed in the bushes 80 yards behind where we parked and no call decided to let him be. Took a walk and saw two grouse. Decided to make a stalk on one and plugged it in the neck off hand about 25 yards with the 270 and a hand loaded 90gr bullet. Thanks to the off hand practice a bit earlier made a perfect neck shot. Head stayed attached by just skin. Anyways here is a pic of the bird. Once again no camera there but here is a home pic of the bird

I don't think a better shot is possible than that.

It's definitely cleaner than taking the head off. The bird had a beautiful tail I will post a pick of it tomorrow. Usually take the tails and fan them out like miniature Turkeys. Unfortunately forgot the two tails of my eastern wa grouse. But I've kept most of them over the years. Kind of made it tradition.

It's always nice taking a grouse out with a whole lot of overkill! I got a nice blue grouse last year with a 180 grain bullet out of my 30/06.

Nice shooting, did that same thing many years ago on a Mountain Quail using a trusty 30-30.  Sure makes it easy to clean and eat later
