Goose Spreads/Whats working?

Just curious to know what has been working for guys as far as goose spreads goes, how many decoys are you setting out and what kind of formation are you using? Before the holidays I had some decent success with the classic U shaped spread with about 40 decoys. Yesterday when I was out scouting I saw a couple real flocks of geese out on some corn in an H formation, then a couple real big groups spread out all over in groups of 5 or 6 with no real organization to them.

When traffic geese on public lands I just use my best decoys and use about a dozen.  Never saw any real improvement but didn't hurt and less decoys to set and pick up.  About the spreads just keep the deks bunched where you don't want them to land and spread out where you want them.  Real geese in the field are just eating and resting, not making shapes to make landing zones like us.  If you find a field with geese to hunt, wind at your back and a place to hide is all you need to plan out.

I've found that having a lot of open area for the geese to circle over helps, meaning don't set up so they have to fly over brush or trees to work into your spread.

I always liked the little family groups but not spread out to far. kind of random with a couple different landing zones. I also like to watch them to see what they are doing naturally & imitate as best as possible. don't try to force them into "your spot" give them some options & make your set seem as relaxed as possible. good luck!

When I hunt in fields, I like to have two big groups that form a "U" with a couple of smaller groups outside of them. With the wind at my back, the bird almost always land in the middle of the "U". I have heard that later in the season when its colder, you should bunch up your decoys so they are closer together.

I am using two dozen DSD's and I don't do any letters.  I scout the field, note how the geese are set up along with cover and wind conditions.  I then try to mimic how I saw them set up. 

They are getting wise!  If they learn how to spell all the by the book guys are SOL.   

Stay away from the letters V, C, J, U, T, X and you should be good to go.

I agree with h20fowlr... 

You scout the geese while they are in the field.  If there are groups you need to make groups.  Those are family units/buddies.  You resemble those buddies in your spread they will say hey there is Bill and his buddies lets go eat with them. 
When I did goose hunt I would draw a picture of the geese while they fed.  Then when they flew away the next morning I would be there with that drawing in hand to make the same pattern.  It sure worked for me...

Big Honkers, If I'm on the X I'll use a dozen or so, mostly feeder and rester poses and 1 sentry. Running traffic, I'll unload the trailer. Dinks on the X maybe 3 dozen, mostly feeder and resters with a few more sentry poses. Love to get wads of dinks to circle and circle and circle and grow bigger and bigger in numbers. Nothing like a flock of 50 growing to a flock of 300 or more backwinging in the set. The noise is quite spectacular.

It all depends upon where it is. One field could use 4 dozen mixed life size,the other using 3 full bodied,and the other using none but strictly realistic calling only

Most fields, small spreads, little of no calling.

This time of year almost requires full bodies or bad weather to fool them and pay attention to what the geese are telling you. And don't be afraid to move your spread around to accommodate the birds. I don't call much this time of year. Flag and call lightly or in response to their calling.
