My boy
« on: January 23, 2014, 07:29:51 AM »

My boy has been bit by the archery bug! For the last several weeks it's all he wants to do. He was given a bow for Christmas, he shot it at a friends (archery hunter) that guy gave him a target and and some better arrows, and any free time he gets ,he's out in the yard.

I've never really been into them, but he keeps asking me to get one to shoot with him. Help me out, what do I need to know?

I am 6,3 does that effect things?

I don't have a ton of money, so I don't want to break the bank.

If I look on craigslist what things should I avoid?

I see them in pawn shops and stuff?

Some of your knowledge please!

Your height id put you at a 30"-31" draw. You wouldnt need to spend a lot to get going, the companies are trying to move the last year bows out which means you can get something at a low price. Id bet you could find a ready to shoot package for under 400 new. Bear pse diamond, parker, quest all have bows that will work. If you go used and dont have knowledge in what to look for see if someone that knows bows can help you maybe even go and look with you. Theres lots of good used bows but theres also POS ones too.

For just starting look for a bow with a 7" or more brace height, probly a single cam and a grip that fits your hand. Dont go crazy about a high draw weight or speed just get what feels nice and comfortable.

Thumbs up on getting your boy out there shooting.

I have a system I am thinking about selling.  PSE Mach something.   I am 6'5" so should be set up pretty close for you.   I paid $1100 for the system.  I am thinking about selling it.  Probably in the 350.00 range to someone "I know".  Its just sitting in a case.  I haven't shot it lately beause I mostly hunt traditional.  It has an overdraw, but still shoots long sized arrows because of "our" wingspan.    Downside would be its not the newest greatest thing.   Goodside is it was the newest greatest thing, is in immacualate condition and I have killed a couple record book animals with it.  Let me know if you are slightly interested in it at all and I will get you some photos this weekend.

(would include case, bow, overdraw, quiver, what arrows I have with it, release if I can find it, etc. ready to pull out and should  be dialed in already)  would ask for reimbursement for shipping)

If its the PSE Mach X then it is a great bow. Its been my only bow for 5 years. I've been to PSE's headquarters here in Arizona a few times and Pete Shepley's crew still talk about the Mach X for how revolutionary it was for them. I have lots of guys draw a coveted bull elk tag and buy them a brand new bow setup for $1,000+. You can spend a lot more, but can shoot just as good with this one.
