Ruger American Rimfire
« on: January 27, 2014, 08:11:31 PM »
Has anyone purchased the Ruger American in the .22 mag or .17 hmr?  I was curious as to how good of gun it was.  Trying to decide between the .22 mag & .17 hmr.
Cut em!

I'm buying one in .22 mag as soon as I can find one (sportsmans off sr500 had it in compact). Shot my buddies and it is a sweet shooter.  I hate the .17hmr caliber!  I've owned one and if its slightly windy its worthless over 50 yds.  Awesome guns at a great price.

I'm thinking about getting a .22mag as well. This is the type of rifle I've been searching for several years now.
Talked with Williams the other day and they are coming out with peep sight to be placed at the scope mount in February.

I have been running one since September. It's a nice little gun. I have the full size 22 mag. I bought it more as a little truck gun then anything else. I have a 77/22 mag that is 4x the gun that the American is. It shoots pretty good, nothing amazing. I have run 3 types of ammo and it shoots it all about the same. For the money not a bad little gun.

FWIW, I have been seeing a little bit of .17HMR ammo on the shelves recently but not the .22 mag, might be one factor to consider. :twocents:

Yeah I have not been seeing to much myself. If you hit the sportsmans warehouses at the right time a guy can find some from time to time. Mainly total metal jack stuff.

I just bought 350 rounds of the 22 mag Remington and speer self defense.  It is showing up on shelves now too....you just have to be quick and decisive when you see it.

I saw a bunch of that sitting on the shelves at hooked on toys. They had a good amount of 22 mag stuff around. I just did not know what it would shoot like in the rifles when it was targeted for handguns. I am stocked on cci 22 mag stuff. I burn threw a lot of it so I always stay stocked on it.

A benchrest shooter friend of mine was so impressed with the Ruger American rifle in 22 Magnum he bought that he bought the carbine model too.  He was in Hooked on Toys and complained that they had a lot of 22 Magnum ammo, but no guns to shoot it in.  They called his bluff!  :chuckle:  I have 2 rifles in 17 HMR, and love them.  (one of them I bought from him!)  Plenty of ammo for the 17 HMR is available--It's the HM2 ammo that is nearly impossible to get!  :twocents:

You get what you paid for. The 77/22 is indeed 4x the value of the American and I wouldn't mind having one. You think it could have custom iron sights?

I went to Cabelas today and they had the Ruger American in .22 mag.  Seemed like a good gun.  They wanted $299 for them.  The mags hold 7 .22 mag shells.  The old timer next to me was buying it in the .22 cal and said not to get the mag and use a center fire.  I want a mag for closer knock down.

I ended up pulling the trigger and went with the .22 mag.  I went and purchased it from Skagit Arms as they worked a good deal for me.  I was out the door for less than what Cabelas wanted it for.  Worked out good.
